Flip the cleat round then.

Mad whips cannot be contained by mere steel springs. Happened to me down West hill. Bricks were promptly shat.

what's the current skinny on ATACs? I've bent an axle on my ROC/Xs and notice they have been discontinued, likely cos the axles are made out of playdoh/I put out an un-managable number of watts.
looks like the alium and ROCs have been replaced with cheaper versions of the square bar ones, but can't see them available anywhere yet. Commuting in keos is getting kind of boring. -

Now they really just do XC models starting at xc2.

Time Atac are like rocking horse poo to come by now-a-days... as per ^ now just XC models... but is anyone using them, are they any good, is there another option? I've been using eggbeaters and even though I don't do skidz I still always feel mere nano-seconds from disaster... they just don't feel...right.

Just started using ATACS last week, my first clipless experience, used pedals in good condition, new cleats, I unclipped as well. I read few threads and here is a list of tips I collected, can anyone add more/tell me if they aren't true:
- swap the cleats
- avoid unclipping with the foot that pulls the most in braking/skidding
- avoid walking on rough surfaces as much as possible to don't ruin the soft cleats too fast
Is this all good? Is this it?
Also, there was a thread of someone producing/selling special CNCed cleats with a release angle of 17degrees or a similar bling he developed for himself due to the large amount of downhill he had to do. I can't manage to find it at the moment, can someone share me the link?
- swap the cleats

If you fix the cleats to your shoes on the side that they require a greater degree of heel rotation to release, and then dial up any tension settings on your pedals, that should be enough. Which side (Left or Right shoe) you install them affects release angle. I think the Right cleat (marked "R") on the Left shoe increases the angle needed to 17deg. Right on Right would be 13deg.
I usually unclip with my right foot. Whatever feels comfortable for you without sacrificing control and falling off.
If you're using ATAC cleats with mtb shoes with tread on the soles then they're designed for rough surfaces. The cleats are metal anyway. Road cleats which are soft and exposed and plastic, or the fiddly Speedplay ones, you don't want to be walking on rough surfaces with.
Check the cleats are securely installed and in the same position both sides. I always put a little grease on the screws. Not sure if it makes any difference. Install them in-line with the ball (back) of your big toe, which you can feel through the side of your shoe, and then move forwards or backwards a little if you need to from there.

You only need to have to drill/Dremel/nuke seized cleats screws once, to know what good advice this is.

i have an odd one i wanna know if anyone else has experienced
recently put my old atacs back on the bike after using road pedals for ages, and can 'rock' my foot in the pedals when clipped in, sort of like a a boat rocking in the waves
are the pedals shot or just need something replaced? the cleats are pretty good condition
-
• #886
Rock as in side to side, as if you're performing the motion to release them? If so that's normal..
-
• #887
no not moving my heal out, as 'rocking a boat' motion if my foot was the boat
-
• #888
It seems that Time have killed off the Aliums again
-
• #889
Never had any issues personally. Will check them once a year or so.
-
• #890
Maybe try moving the pedals around by hand and see if they're loose on the axle? Check the cleat attachment point on your shoes too? Try adjusting the spring tension on the pedals?
-
• #891
Done all of that adjustment, only thing left to try is swapping them to go up to the 17deg.
Nobody recalls that bling cleats thread I am talking about? did I make it up?
-
• #892
Vaguely remember that- but it was ages ago right? Were the ones the dude was making any more than the 17* release angle though?
Strange that you unclipped, I would suggest it was technique rather than defect.
-
• #893
Wasn't that long ago, less than 3-4 months. Yeah he was making special cleats to go higher than 17 to make sure he'd never unclip going downhill.
I wouldn't be surprised to be the cause of my unclipping rather than a defect as well, given I have no experience at all.. It's just that you feel so much safer than with straps that you believe you can pull and push as hard as you can and still feel solidly connected. I'll have to learn the technique, hopefully not the hard way.
thanks for all the tips tho

Have you tried spd's?
-
• #895
No, if you asked me.

need to upgrade my pedals. old atacs not doing the trick.

these are cheap but "lower spring tension" ? probably not what im after. any about for £40-£50 that are suited to a fixie rider like myself
-
• #897
The text is confusing me- I read it as ATACs have lower spring tension than other makes overall rather than these pedals have lower tension than other ATACs. Could be wrong though..
-
• #898
yeah it seems to describe a lot of their pedals like that
-
• #899
ordered them anyway. come with cleats so pretty fucking cheap
-
• #900
they're pretty good from experience. we have them on both the Bris Bullitts and while obviously not brklss they've always felt really secure
nah, roc xs couple years old, cleats arent that worn either
