I'd been riding SPD for over 15 years, went to ROC's earlier this year (end of May).
No problems at all- very similar feel to SPD apart from much more secure, no false clip-in, and the ROC version seem to guide your foot to the right place to clip in much better than SPD.
My view- ROC's beat SPD, I'll not be going back.

Not a bad little recommendation.. I reckon they're worth a punt. Then again I could use my spare SPDs.. which would cost me £0.. hmm..

Hippy, I came from SPD/eggbeater, it take surprisingly little to get used to clipping in, but then, why listen to a fixie skidder with riser on his bike for commuting?
Put it this way, I thought the spd were pretty well made and secure, until I tried the time roc atac.

Risers and scared of minipumps.. so normally I wouldn't listen Ed, but you're echoing other people's comments so this is good ja.

wore spud's for 14 /15 years, switched to times at first couldn't quite get on with them, spd's you engage your toe then clip the back in, with times it's the opposite way around
love them now though

What Dammit said, plus you have to get used to the clip-out. With SPDs, you can just think about twisting your heel, and they disengage (unless it's a misclip). Times need (what feels like) a more extreme/definite twist out, but you get used to it quickly (a week of commuting). It's to do with the spring mechanism. The slower you twist, the more resistance to unclipping you feel.
Can't remember getting any joint issues. The cleats are about as adjustable as SPDs. The float feels a bit squishier than SPDs, but in a nice way. I usually set them up for the less severe release angle (it's based on which cleat goes on which shoe).
Much nicer click, sonically speaking. If I click in aggressively whilst riding the Burls, it makes the frame sing :)

i've got a spare set of ATACs you can borrow if you want hippo.

And I've just found a set of semi-worn cleats (plenty of life left) that are attached to a pair of shoes I doubt I'll ever wear again. I realise you don't want the shoes/they won't fit you.

I wish ATACs were even stiffer and more secure. I've never had an unintentional unclip, but I like to feel secure. Mine feel a bit loose now.

You WILL also take a couple of tumbles in the process too, but they'll be of the 0 mph horizontal trackstand variety.
I always found unclipping really instinctive, never had a tumble. In fact I had a go on a mates bike the other day with clips and straps and totally panicked at how much I was stuck in them wretched things.

Does anyone know anywhere that carries spare parts for Time pedals? I have some used ATAC XE whose axle seals have disintegrated and they look to be identical to the current ROC/Z seals. Any specialist MTB shops etc??

- 1 to everyone who said buy the Alliums, and spank cash on a decent shoe - i have been riding my Alliums for just over a year now, no probs.
Also have a set of the Z freeride pedals, which i find to be about the best pedal i have used for around town, as the platform has enough room for you to unclip and keep going in a sketchy situation, and you never miss a clip in. Of course being BMX style they wont suit every build, but i love em, and they weigh about the same as the Alliums.
I recently needed to get hold of another set for a new bike, and thought i would drop a bit of cash on a higher ROC model as i thought they would be all singing and dancing, but they weren't noticeably lighter or better until you drop well over 100 quid, so just got another set of alliums

look very much like a space fighter! Netherless i'mreally pleased with mine, 2nd days and already clipping in/out is almost instinctly.
Oh and hippy, just so you know, I do carry a pump.

I thought the exact same before I bought mine. Just keep telling yourself that you won't be able to see them when you're clipped in. Anyway, once you've used them for a while and they get a bit scratched up (the paint on the Aliums go real quick) they just look part of the bike.
Peeps...stop thinking about it and get ordering!! Granted I have no experience with any other clipless system (be it spud/roadeggbeaters/whatever) but ATACs are the shiznit. It's not forum hype.

For road bike I'd use a full carbon road shoe, and speedplay pedals.
My SPDs are almost 10. Aww.. happy birthday to you. They are at the end of their fantastic little lives. The bearings are loose. The tension will go no higher and the actual cleat interface is almost no more so my feet rattle around like nobody's business. I am sad. But I am happy since I has da new shoes..
BMMF: You went from SPDs to TIME. How did you find the transition? Float on both is 5deg I think but they must feel different so did it take a long time to adapt? Any joint issues crop up? Stack height is about a mm lower on ATAC so not much in it. Double the price but still pretty cheap and I suppose if I try and don't like them someone on here will want them..
Well that's this afternoon's thinking out loud all done. Back to cake pictures..
