  • Picture does not work, did the brackets snap? I was just considering switching to SPD as my ROC ATACs are getting worn out and the new models don't seem particular confidence inspiring. Nowt wrong with an M520 for as far as I can see, apart from being a bit boring...

  • Sorry, on my phone so uploading not working well – try the link.

  • Sick, did not expect that to fail.

  • And twice! Exactly the same thing. Will get in touch with them and see if they have had this issue from anyone else. Don't think I'll be getting another pair, been lucky so far that both times they've broken while stopping at traffic lights, rather than moving swiftly downhill etc

  • Anyone got where to buy new bearings for XC pedals? Got XC8 and 12 in different bikes for some years now

  • I bought some from simplybearings.com (or equivalent) a few years ago. Bear in mind that if you have play in the pedals the new bearings won't solve that. You can (could?) get bearings and bushings sets on Ebay, worth a check.

  • Is play simply game over? New cleats didn't solve it for me and bearings seem to be fine.

  • From what I understand the new bushings will solve that. When I swapped my bearings (only) the movement was smoother but there was still play.
If you can't source the bushings I can sort you out a pair of Atac pedals for cheap, just let me know.

  • Good to know, I have some bit of play in one of them. Worst case scenario is buying the cheapest version and do a internals swap with my XC12 I guess

  • It feels like the play is between cleat and the piece of steel holding the cleat rather than the pedal body and the axle. Don’t think they have adjustable tension, but I’ll have long hard look later today.

  • It can be grooves wearing in the sole of the shoe also, where the steel rubs.

  • Bought a second hand pair of Time Allroad Grippers (to try out double sided). Seems that this bar doesn't seem to be fixed in place and gradually moves out after riding. Presumably it's missing some kind of retainer/bolt? Any one with any experience with this issue and know a solution? It's same on both pedals.

  • So after over a quarter of a century of using Atacs pretty much exclusively, I think I've finally given up on them.
I absolutely love Atacs, but the quality of them has gone so downhill over the years that I can't justify the cost of constantly replacing them anymore.
The most recent version I bought was a set of speciale 8's...which aren't exactly cheap. After less than a year of being on my work bike they both have bad axle play that can't be adjusted out, and one of the retention bars has snapped on the left side, with all the bars showing really bad wear. A problem which definitely got worse once they switched to the square bars on the higher models.
The cleats have always been soft as shit so needed replacing regularly. But I could live with that before when the pedals themselves were better.
I've now decided it's time to stop spending my money on them. 😕

I'm not a huge fan of SPD's. Something about them I just don't get on with.

So I just picked up a set of the Hope Union trail pedals to see if the new kids on the block will bring back the love I used to have for Atacs.
First impressions are that the quality of machining is typical exceptional Hope standard.
Hope bearings are good quality, so I have high hopes there. The cleats and all mechanisms are stainless steel, so hopefully I won't be buying new cleats every couple of months now.
The feel is very similar to Atacs which is a big win for me.
I'll see whether I need to tighten the retention springs once I give them a proper go at work tomorrow...but fingers crossed they will be a worthy successor to my beloved Atacs!

  • Im buying cleats finally for these. My lbs can’t get them and I found two versions on the mash webstore. Which do you recommend for fixed gear brakeless riding :/ probably either if both are available on the mash site. https://shop.mashsf.com/time-atac-13-17-degree-cleats.html https://shop.mashsf.com/time-atac-easy-10-cleats.html

  • Absolutely NOT the easy cleats!

  • They still don't quite have the reassuring CLUNK of Atacs, and the left one has already developed a squeak from the springs, but I guess that's to be expected. They're going to need the springs lubing from time to time. Otherwise they feel secure enough. The platform is really supportive too on the trail version. I need some new shoes though so the cleats grind a lot at the moment, but being stainless steel it hopefully won't cause too much wear.
I still love Atacs for the feel and function, but they're just not good enough quality anymore for all day, everyday use. :(
I think for anyone used to spds the Hope are a good alternative.
Now I just need to see how easy the cleats will be to get hold of.

  • How come not the easy cleats? I've always just bought whatever I could find cheapest and just assumed all the cleats would wear down as fast.

I've had old school yellow atacs on my work bike for years and never had any issues, have always been bomber. Bought a brand new pair of new atacs and they irreparably broke on the first day of use so I definitely second the new atacs being shit.

  • Thanks. Ordered the 13/17

  • The easy cleats unclip with less twisting of the foot. On a brakeless bike I found them too unpredictable. They're kind of the 'beginner' cleat, which is why they provide them with the entry level pedals and not the higher end ones. If you compare the two the easy cleats are basically like an already slightly worn 13/17 cleat. Hence why they unclip sooner.

  • I always though Time cleats are either “easy” or “hard” to unclip with depending on which foot you put the cleat on?

It’s been a while since I bought any though so I could be wrong.

  • The 13/17 are 13deg or 17deg depending on which foot you put the one with the star. I always had them set to 17deg.
But the actual 'easy' cleat is only 10deg, so unclips much earlier.

  • Interesting, never knew there was an ‘easy’ cleat.

  • and the left one has already developed a squeak from the springs,

Was going to ask if this was just when you clip in/out or on every pedal stroke but I’ve just looked at the price of them so it probably doesn’t matter.

I moved away from Atacs to spd because it felt like my foot was falling off the outside of the pedal with Atacs but tbh that might have been exacerbated by me wearing skate style shoes that were too big for me.

Anyway, been fairly happy with spds but they don’t seem to last long before they start creaking. I think it’s the bit that holds the cleat getting rusty.

I had been buying the cheapest m540 pedals because I had them on a few bikes but now I’ve only really got one bike running clipless I wonder if I should spend more on fancier spds or try something like Look?
