Practice shifting the majority of your weight onto the handlebars while standing up. This will make it alot easier to lock your legs. The tricky bit is discovering what position your feet are in the crank rotation that works best for you. You can also apply your front brake a little, this will shift weight forward & help to take weight off the rear making it easier to lock up.
Ultimately skidding is lots of fun but shouldn't be your only means of stopping. I'd avoid the rear skipping jumpy method mentioned above as imho it looks like you need to take a shit when viewed from behind and anyone who doesn't know what you are up to will think you are peculiar.

It may have been smarmy but so fucking what. The fact is that brakes stop a cyclist quicker, easier and better. Why bother wasting time, energy and tyres when you could just pull a fucking lever.
All this (hand)brakeless bullshit makes me laugh, especially the excuses some people come out with (as if there's any other reason than "it's fashionable and I like the way my bike looks without the brake")

to hop or skip the rear wheel:
get your weight forward as if you are about to attempt a skid, at the point where you would normally resist the cranks, back pedal whilst lifting your feet sharply. The rear wheel will leave the ground. The movement is short and sharp, not a massive heave.
you can do series of these hops to stop, or do an endo over the bars if you don't know your balance points. I'm assuming that as you already know how to skid, that you are comfortable with this.
I sometimes perform this manoeuvre to slow or stop, despite running a brake. It's good to have the skills in case your cable snaps or something...

Also, the most effective braking happens before a skid (where the wheel has lost traction), so skip stops if done well should stop you faster.

Although I'm not sure if it counts as a proper skip stop, sometime I do a couple of small hops coming up to lights when wanting to stop straight into a trackstand without puuting feet down. The couple of hops while rolling to a stop lets me keep feet in the best position for trackstanding, yet also position the bike just where I want it.

It's not trackstanding that's bad for your knees, probably more using your legs for breaking or turning too high a gear.
