  • Nice to meet some of you in real life-- any chance this will move further north soon?

+1. Can we go back to the Sovereign now? At least they had better food. And a quiz.

  • Bloody hell, I thought this was the West Beers thread and wondered why we were suddenly invaded by Easties. Right, I'm going to find that West thread.

  • ^ Isn't that a bit like getting lost in your own house...?

  • Nice to see all last night sorry
When GF and I were there most others from south london
    (Know what velocio means:)

missed you BQ and BB had to get up early so had swift couple.
Be there next week and wlll stay later
    where was skully though?

    • 1 to the sovereign, you want quizzes? Go somewhere else on a different night of the week. Grumble.
  • Come on, cranky pants. Wednesday night pub quiz and pizza is the future.

  • When we were at the sov loads of people came every week. The britannia is pretty poorly attended some weeks, even though on the surface it is a fantastic pub and they give us preferential treatment. I'd love to know why people don't go there.

  • tbf, I don't have any time for anything at the moment.

  • Well we will do the Kidd again next week so you have fair warning :-)

  • Cool, I'll have hit a deadline or two by then.

I successfully went to the Soveriegn for Easts a few times did not partake in the quiz and had an awesome time.

Admittedly one of these times I ended up in a gaybar playing table tennis until 3am, but you know, what can you do.

  • Wait, gays have their own bars?

Thats why I miss the Sov. Its potential for random events. The Brittania is super nice and chilled and we get preferential treatment, but its usually us, the cricket team and a few random drunks. And yes, theres a nice beer garden for summer, and theres plenty of space. And there was that lockin the first time we went there..

But I miss the loud american bar staff, the track pump behind the bar, the pizza, even the random other people. Half the people who came to easts there didnt even have bikes. And just occasionally we won enough money to pay for beer when we proved we're smarter than everyone else. And then we'd end up on the other side of stokey pole dancing.

Did I mention its also nearer my house :)

  • I think easts needs a hook, like souths has the burger deal and norths has swains lane. I would prefere it to not be based around a quiz, but it seems what people wanted!

  • Britannia has a table football table and ping pong table too.

Well my excuse is that I'm busy ish or is summer and better things to do.

  • What other hooks are needed In addition to the ping pong, table football, bikes in garden, bikes in pub, big garden backing on a park, selection of decent ales, good food, friendly bar people?

How about grass track racing on well street common?

  • I still miss the TT.
What's the state of the old running track these days? Could we do flying laps?

  • I don't think the Britannia works for Easts, and I'm with eggpie on this. Every pub has advantages and disadvantages, and the Britannia has many of the former, but it's been almost completely dead every Wednesday evening. It seems like more of a week-end destination pub, a country inn transplanted into the inner city. The space feels vast and has no atmosphere when there are very few people in it. I also think that being located on the annoying one-way system with the street leading there being one-way against the flow of potential Easts goers has something to do with poor attendance. It's clearly a high-demand route--you see a lot of cyclists going contraflow on the footway.

To my mind, the two Easts pubs that worked best were the Royal* Inn and the Royal* Sovereign, not necessarily in any order. I miss the evenings at the Royal Inn, but I'd also like to go back to the Sovereign every once in a while.

People may be pleased to hear that there is a prospect of getting cycle parking in opposite the Jolly Butchers. I'll keep you updated. :)

    • Theme emerging there? ;)

When they remove all that festival shit I am so checking that out.
I might pop out now and recce it actually.

Part of the attraction is that nobody goes there because of the one-way system. It means they fucking love us. The reason there's nobody there and no atmosphere is because we're not there in sufficient numbers. We could completely take over the place, Greyhound-style if we were there en masse.

I don't see why the stupid one-way road should affect us cyclists at all. On the way there you can go through the park and on the way back you can use the road.

If the Butcher's gets cycle parking then we should seriously consider going there. For a start it's run by one of us, and secondly it's packed with great beers.

are we talking about grove road? afaik there's nothing blocking it, it's just the 3 new level crossings that get in the way.

  • I was talking about the old 400m running track in the park.

  • They're talking about the running track in the park, Marlon.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

  • I think you stole mine, actually.
