• fatboyralph it is also possible that these scums are going through this forum. if you think about it, makes their job easy, what's in what's not, where to spot the nice bikes, which pubs, where we chain bikes, what sells on ebay, etc...if they are that organised, they'd know about this. they might even be posing here as a legit fg/ss member selling their goods!

Erk? Makes my shit pile look a bit dodgy now.

It's all legit i tells ya! I just hoard stuff :(

• ...sorry to hear about this, that is a really tasty bike, remember seeing it down at the warehouse...I have gone down the route of never locking mine anywhere for fear of it getting stolen, but then that takes away much of the beautiful freedom of movement that comes with using a bike in London...

just on the topic of people coming down to polo with stolen bikes, it happened to me on a Saturday once when I was playing basketball there...this guy came up with a Specialised Allez...he asked if anyone wanted to buy his Alleeeeeez (ie mispronunciation), so it was obvious it was nicked, and he was a v. shady character...I was right in the middle of a game, and didn't really stop and think what to do...what should I have done?

anyways...will definitely keep my eyes peeled for this...

• aidan
wYs i sometimes ride my bike round bricklane in tracksuit bottoms, reebok classics and a hoody. Dont stab me please.

if the bike looks a bit to big for you expect a knife in the gut.
im 6'4" dont think thats possible.

(the bike being too big, not the knife in the gut!)

• JOL So was it locked?

Yeah, what lock was used? Abus Granit D-lock? or something a lot easier to cut/open?

Phew!

• ....actually that brake leaver did look freshly stolen...
i think a **'the thing' **type blood test is require on all members.

• oh mate, thats so shitty. really sorry for emma. i'll keep my eyes open.

just for the record, i watched a programme that convinced me that plastic coated d-locks, like the kryptonite ones are the hardest to get through. even those really big chain locks (i don't know what they're called) can be cut in a second with the right equipment. Apparently the only way to get through a d-lock is by picking the plastic off and spraying it with some chemical (i forget what its called) to make the metal brittle before smashing it apart. just getting the plastic off takes ages so i think a couple of these are the best deterrent.

You can easily obtain keys which will open all the d-locks with the "round keyhole". Chains can be cut in seconds by pneumatic bolt cutters.

• it's inevitable if you leave a bicycle with gleaming, often vastly expensive hubs, costly headsets, very expensive wheels that don't depreciate and have a high resale value, locked to a railing in an essentially poor area, it will attract attention.

i am not condoning theft. i am however, suggesting there may be a link between the high incidence of targetted bike theft in tower hamlets and the essentially disenfranchised youth that live there, who, when confronted by signs of wealth beyond them at every corner (i.e bike worth *at least *£600, more than can be gained from any opportunist theft), find the temptation to make easy money too great.

it doesn't take a degree in rocket science to notice the increasing prevalence of really shiny expensive looking bicycles, often without brakes and fairly unique anodized bits that stand out from the crowd. if you want to ride expensive keirin frames, etc, then do so, brilliant, but don't leave them anywhere. ever.

the only solution is to not lock your bike anywhere if you don't want to lose it. otherwise, get a beater which you can afford to lose, for those all important trips to the supermarket or the prince george.

can i add, i am gutted for emma, and the mercian owner, and everyone else who has lost a bike. i have had bikes stolen in the past, and it's horrible when you get back and there is a void where the velo used to be.

• what about taking pictures of these guys selling bikes etc and creating a fear campaign where thiefs think there are a group of vigilantes out to get them

• I'm getting my new frame in a week and it is geting a fucked up paint job straight away as an extra deterrent

Sour buzz, was the bike locked up?? Not sure if anyone has answered that yet.

The poorest most socially deprived council wards in the country are in TH. Stir in a nicely simmering smack problem, and sprinkle with gang culture and hey presto. 5 years ago it was a warzone between Brick Lane and Camden gangs with a running knife, hammer and machete battle down Bethnal Green Road with 50 kids and vans driving round kidnapping each other. Read up a bit about the Brick Lane Massive.

I've heard of a few ways to break d locks but theres a high chance of wrecking the frame doing it. My mate once lost the key for a d lock that was round his neck, after me explaining how we could get it off he decided he would just wear it for the weekend mountain biking until he got home and use the spare key.

Somehow think a few skinny indie kids taking photos isn't gonna do much to create a climate of fear among these kids...

• That's horrible. You have a decent lock and want to nip into the shop for 2 minutes...and gone.
If we really wanted to catch them....
One person with bike (looking like they're on their own) locks up nice bike and goes into supermarket...
Whilst...on foot (pretending to be on own) we all walk up and down the road like 'regulars' with eyes on bike...waiting to pounce?
I've seen gangs down there though and wouldn't like to tackle them. Only the police could do it and they're not interested.
What I will say...
The police rescue tons of bike from theives around there and they end up at the police auction around the corner.

The stolen bikes thread should be 'private' so only members can see. Then at least we'd be able to monitor who's checking the thread right?
Or is that as bad as giving out ID cards?
Thieves might be watching...

• i doubt they will sell it to anyone in london........anyway ill keep my eyes peeled....
can i just out of interest ask how it was locked and what lock was used?????
cuz it seems a bit weird that someone would go through a good lock in 2 minutes.....

• Its very sad that people are unable to leave their bikes anywhere in London for more than a few seconds.

Personally, I hate leaving mine anywhere even with 2 locks ( an abus granit futura and one of those big ones I wear round my waist ). It also takes away some of the fun having to carry around so much extra bloody weight.

Wouldn't it be lovely is someone could invent a kind of electrical shield that once activated, anybody who touched the bike was pretty much toast. Al la James Bond style.

Seriously though, I really hope you get this back.
If anyone wants to organise some sort of intimidation/retribution I would be up for some violence ;)

I know people are talking about meeting up here for before the Ride tomorrow night. Where the hell are all the bikes going to go.

Maybe that would be a time to show these fuckers we won't stand for this shit?

Pull up a map of East London gang territories, overlay a social deprivation map and the Chris Crash bike theft map and you won't be able to tell the difference.

Truth indeed - although it seems like Brixton (where I live) has a fair amount of deprivation but not as many people with nice bikes so it might only work for East London.

Seriously? The people who nick these bikes probably spend most of their time nicking, snorting, fucking and fighting, what the hell are we gonna do to them? Most of the people that I've met from this forum are lovers, not fighters, and certinly not gonna take on a gang of bike thieves in a big street brawl. Especially me.

• broken_77 i doubt they will sell it to anyone in london........anyway ill keep my eyes peeled....

I was going to say that. All these really flash bikes that are incredibly unique (and obvious to spot) may be being shipped out to other cities. I seriously doubt they'd sell them as is in London, because it's too risky. As des said, they'd be stupid not to use this forum, and so they'd know that theres an increasing community of cyclists keeping their eyes out for stolen bikes. It's not gonna stop them stealing, it's just going to make them peddle their wares elsewhere.

• I think we should rename the forum

full sus mountain bike lovers

just to put em off
