Turbo Trainer Advice

  • Cheers! Just ordered of CR, same price as Rose

  • I've tried and failed on here to get a 2nd hand 11spd Shimano rear for my turbo, any suggestions for cheapest alternative to buy?

  • I posted this in Training/fitness but it looks like it's more relevant to here - for the record I have an Elite Hydro-Mag trainer.

I did my TR ftp (2x8) test last night and totally messed it up as I went too hard in the first interval had nothing left for the second one. I got what I feel is quite an optimistic ftp and was wondering if many people have done much using virtual power and a real power meter? Is it normal for virtual power to over estimate?

I know as long as it's consistent then it's fine to train with, but obviously I'm curious. If anyone is willing to lend me a power meter for an evening (wheel or pedal I guess) I will re do the test to see what the difference is!

  • I got what I feel is quite an optimistic ftp and was wondering if many people have done much using virtual power and a real power meter? Is it normal for virtual power to over estimate?

I think @TTM came to that conclusion, after switching from virtual power to an actual power meter.

  • I used TR with a KK Road Machine for quite a while and found that it did overestimate power. Every trainer is different though, so it's hard to say if this is the case for all.

  • how much did you find it overestimated by?

  • It was about 15 watts I think. It was consistent along the whole power curve which I was impressed by.

  • Having just looked at your ftp test, @cjr. Either something isn't quite right, or you're an absolute beast!

Holding an average of 500w for 8 minutes O.o

    *cries *

  • Sounds like a virtual power anomaly.

What was the FTP for the test?

  • @TTM it came out at 387 (500 average for first 8min, 372 for the second)
If it's consistent, I'm not too worried as I can still train based on it, but it would be nice to know if I am in fact a beast or the more likely scenario that TR is flattering me.

TR support says my turbo does seem to overestimate power but gave me no indication of by how much.

  • I'm a bit confused by the result, as those averages for each 8 min interval should give an FTP nearer the 400 mark.

If not too personal, what do you weigh in at?

Anyway, if those numbers are accurate then they are scary.

  • That was NP I think so may have accounted for the difference. (.9 of the average would have been 392 i think)
Weight wise, I'm around 83kg, and 5'10.5 so I'm no hill climber.

  • I see. Well then that all sounds quite reasonable and the numbers are very good. W/kg at about 4.7 is strong.

I totally understand about wanting to verify them with a real PM, but as you've already said, as long as you have repeatable and consistent data to work with then there's no real need. Good luck with the training.

  • 4.7 Watts per KG, fuggin hell

  • So to get your FTP you take 90% of 2 x 8 minutes, which should be the same as 95% of a 20 minute test?

Also, 4.7w/kg is awesome, great work.

  • Virtual doping!
If i can borrow a power meter I will return with an update, otherwise I guess I will just let people think I'm stronger than I am!

  • I broke my fucked old turbo a while ago, and am looking for a shiny new one. This has just come out, and seem pretty decent for the money.

Question: it seems to be transmitting some kind of power data, with the correct dongles or whatever, would I be able to participate in Zwift, rather then the manufacturers own simulation?

  • bkool doesent work with zwift.

Tacx Vortex from Bike24. Nothing else.

Cheapest ANT+ FE C fluid trainer on market.
ANT+ FE C = your trainer will be controlled by apps like Zwift.

If your budget is tighter then Satori. All of that minus fluid (magnetic) and no auto change/app control i.e. it comes with a knob for handlebar for resistance.

  • Thanks for the advice, that seems like a good trainer for the money.

tbh my budget is 'I haven't had a job since July' so I'm realistically just looking for a name for the wish list.

  • Well bkool will be waste of money. Go through this: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/11/2014-winter-trainer-recommendations.html

    and

I can't see any other manufacturer than Tacx with a fully open Ant+ FE C protocol.

  • Can definitely +1 the vortex, been using it for a couple weeks now and really impressed for £230

  • I have no di2 battery. So I'm currently singlespeeding everything.

    I also haven't found a fan.

Plus sweating out my bibs is destroying my ass.

    It's all fucking miserable.

  • Time to put the turbo trainer outside.

  • I have a covered patio area. So its tempting.

    Raining sideways currently though.

    Want more snow!
