Have you tried the turbo specific mat?
-
• #1003
No, they're very expensive and look pretty insubstantial. I get the impression they're more about protecting the floor than reducing vibration. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Buy some foam times, like for a gym. Can be had from halfkrds. Double up. You can also place them around the trainer in a box form to reduced traveled noise.
You can also isolate the tubri trainer by using 2 MDF boards with tennis balls in between to dampen the vibration.
Turbo trainer mats are just that, a thin mat.

I have a few different density yoga mats. Works well.

@ Everyone who has the vortex - how do you find the resistance? I'm wondering if I should get the bushido for ~€150 for the higher resistance (1400w compared to the vortex's 950w)

I've found it more than adequate so far, but I never really do sprints, just work on my depressingly small ftp

Turbo noob questions alert!
Just ordered the tacx vortex from bike 24. Going to get a spare 11spd shimano rear wheel and a turbo tyre but what else..
If I get sufferfest videos do I need trainerroad for the link up for auto resistance with the turbo? What dongle do I need for my laptop, ant+?
Thanks in advance, I have read around but a bit overwhelmed with information.

I have a genuine garmin one that I bought before amazon gave me a free replacement for the one that stopped working. I never got round to returning so I am willing to sell for £15 posted (its new & unused)

Yes please.

Dont bother with a turbo tyre, they are no quieter and sometimes noisier. Any old (Road) tyre will do
-
• #1015
Halfords trainer tyre is cheaper than any folding tyre out there @ £9.99

I've been using the jet fluid and have worn through a Rubino Pro pretty quickly with combined road and trainer use.
Will be using old used road tyres for trainer from now on. -

Just picked up a Lemond Revolution - holf fuck its LOUD but such good road feel, by far the closest turbo to riding on the road.
Currently running a bodged 11speed cassette with a cog missing on the 10speed freehub - if anyone has a 11speed freehub for it please shout :)

As loud as a jet engine apparently
Well, except the LeMond Revolution – which was 20db higher and topped out at 100db, which is literally the same as a jet engine. No joke. Of course, everyone knows it sounds like a jet engine – but this literally proved it.

The 100db was a random spike on the meter - its not that loud.
20db higher is 4x louder, which is about right.

Yeah lemon rev is the best trainer. Worth it.
It's not that loud. Once I've got my headphones on I can't hear anything. My fan is just as loud.

Really enjoying the Lemond - did a 3x15 session - so around 1.5hrs with warm up/rest intervals. No problems, normally it is a real struggle to carry on for more than 45-50mins.

How does it make it easier?
-
• #1025
It's not "easier" as such, just less unpleasant as due to the much higher interia (well actually kinetic energy) it feels much more like riding on the road than the typical "riding through treacle" turbo feeling.
Turbo vibrations. I'm considering buying some rubber matting to go under the turbo to isolate it from the floor. I live in a flat with light wooden floors and want to avoid annoying the neighbours below.
Its already a fluid turbo with a specific tyre.
Any thoughts on this:http://r.ebay.com/6zWsxn
The hope is it'll be more substantial than the commercially available turbo mats.
