I've been running recently rather than going riding after work, or doing a turbo session when I get home, it's been really nice having a change of activity.
PE for the running is a lot higher than PE for a fairly mental turbo session however.

After getting much too fat and finally admitting I don't have the time outside work to get proper rides in, I finally borrowed a turbo.
My aim is to do 45-60 mins a day once the kids are in bed.
Tonight was my 1st go.. 45 minutes alternating between - 30 seconds quite fast* and 30 seconds quite slow **
Turbo is just a basic fan model so I can't vary resistance. My plan is to see how I get on for a week or two then invest in a HRM.
I'd like to say I feel invigorated but I actually feel close to death. Am I doing it wrong ?

Assuming you're on a geared bike. Doesnt the resistance ramp up with wheel speed.
So you can do a simple climbing session using low cadense, and a high gear. Or a sprint session using an interval timer (egg timer or whatever)

I only used to cycle to give my body a break from running.

I would like to put my fixeh on the turbo trainer. But the axle clamps dont close enough to grip the 120 rear axle. I can fit a QR through the hollow axle of my track hub. But isnt long enough.
What are my options?
I'm thinking of threading Tacx bolts outside of my current bolts. But there will be very little thread for them.
I could buy a longer QR. But then it would have the big round ends a turbo specific one would have.
The road bike is not going to be usable before after crimbo, and I really need some turbo options.

You can get extended bolts for 120mm track ends. Tacx. (assuming you have a threaded QR axle)

I noticed this. But my clamp bottoms out nearly 10mm from clamping my current bolts. Will they be long enough?
Feck it. I'll order them and see.

I've ordered the Tacx. With a few washers, I should be able to get it to work. Although I'm not sure I want to ride around with the washers on. If I have to set the axle up for every turbo session. It'll just be another reason to eat pizza instead.
We'll see.
But I quite like the idea of trimming the axle ends that stick out past my current bolts. If that shortens things enough. I can just chuck my QR on the outside of the bolts.

I meant there is very little in the way of adjustment on the turbo itself. I was in my highest gear (so fastest wheelspeed) and able to spin pretty fast, doubt i'd get much in the way of a hillclimb session out of it.
This isn't an issue really as the fast - slow- fast fast slow. gave me enough of the change in effort I needed. .
I'm hoping I can stick to a bit of a regime now I have no excuses.. I stick the turbo outside on the driveway, fire up the ipod and suffer for 45 minutes whilst my kids taunt me through the window. This is not the pretty side of cycling.

OK.
I dont know much about the resistance curve of a wind trainer. The viscosity of air is of course somewhat lower than that of the fluid in a fluid trainer.
I quite like beasting myself with sprint intervals. But doing climbing training indoors is pretty soul destroying.

True.
I did a trainnig ride in a hail storm last night. Apart from abruptly finding the traction limit of my front tyre on a fast corner. It was great ride. I'æd rather be out whatever the weather.
My turbo sessions are a thousand times more structured though.

Yeah, I can't do intervals on the road so the turbo is a necessary evil.

My intervals are 12hrs long.

How much Tui would it take to get you to ride Styrkeprøven? I have an Aussie mate thats offered to drive his 205 in front of me with the boot open. Possibly with a dutch mate sat in it, throwing me Clif bars while getting pissed/stoned.
You sound wider, and faster.
Having a mashed up dutchman hanging out of the back of you would be optional.

Tui? Styrkeprøven?
Quit your jibber jabber, fool!

540 km sportive!!!That's not the one that goes around a lake is it?

I thought you tasmanians liked Tui.

That'd be a big lake.

Anyway, when is it? I've decided I'm going to 'win' it.

Honestly, I've never heard of it. I only know of two Kiwi beers - one sounds German (I can't remember right now but I'd know it if I saw it) and the other one is available at Gourmet Burger Kitchens around London. Mc Something maybe. Gee, who said booze affects memory..
Late June is bad timing if I decide to do another 24hr..
And don't forget rest. Training is only good if you allow your body to recover and adapt (best done whilst drinking beer I find).
