Turbo Trainer Advice

  • Shit, you know what I just remembered? I won a set of hot pink sweat bands for being "the sickest cnut ever at sports n shit" and I wore them that night and have no idea what happened to them. I think one wrist band is on a phone somewhere here but no idea where the headband is.

  • I need a riser block.

  • Do any of the big training apps do turbo trainer control via bluetooth on a windows machine?

  • I usually wear an extra layer on the turbo, while I warm up.

Didn't bother taking it off today.

    Fuck February.

  • More importantly, what sweat bands are you currently using?

  • Push harder. Our conservatory was 4 degrees and I had the fan on. Still ended up just in bibs doing intervals at 120%.

Might be time to reset my ftp.

Or stop choosing such easy workouts....

  • does anyone have any experience of the tacx blue matic in terms of 'smart' features? took delivery of one today, reason for going for this one was that it's meant to have Speed & cadence measurement via ANT+ & Bluetooth so seemed like a bargain for £99 from halfords. but now I've got it I can't figure out how to get it to pair with anything and there's no mention of speed/cadence in the instructions....

  • I'm having a constant struggle with my Elite Direto and the ant+ key due to iOS 11 not properly accepting the ant+ key (thanks apple).

Anyone else struggling with this? Really annoying me as I can't seem to get the trainer working with resistance control, which was the whole bloody point of buying it... I'm wondering if I should buy a cheap laptop to run sufferfest instead, but that seems an extreme option

  • Does the Direto not transmit via Bluetooth?

  • Transmits but doesn't receive, so it will tell sufferfest what I'm doing but won't control it...

  • Zwift won’t work on your Mac? Change platform:

  • From the research I have done on bluetooth control and windows, I don't think it exists yet. Would have thought it should work with a Mac though as people are controlling their trainers with their phones / tablets these days no?

  • I was prepared for Bluetooth not to work to control the trainer as most of what I read said I'd need Ant+ for that - however ant+ doesn't work because iOS 11 doesn't support it.

So I'm left with nothing to control the trainer, and because it's smart only I can't even do it manually (like I was before I got the fancy trainer)... I feel like I'm missing something as there isn't an obvious way of looking at the trainer settings etc. I have the elite app, but even that doesn't seem to let me do simple things like switching erg mode on.

Buying a PC is one option but then I'd need another ant+ key and it's extra money that I'd rather not spend...

  • No idea if this would work, but could you run windows within the mac virtually and run ANT+ through that?

  • I have no idea how I'd do that and not sure if it would work given it's not a 'proper' Mac, just an iPad...

  • Ta. Yeah I have one of those, iOS 11 says it isn't supported - even on the one time I seemed to get it to recognise it, no resistance change on the turbo

  • What is the device exactly

  • It's an iPad but not sure which generation - approx 2 yrs old I think?

It's on iOS 11.2.2; there is a well documented issue with iOS and ant+ (that I found out about after buying the turbo) in that it says it isn't compatible. However most sites say there is a workaround and it can be made to function - however, even when I've been able to get the iPad to recognise the ant+ dongle, it doesn't control resistance on the turbo. Even the elite app doesn't seem to, and it takes ages of plugging / unplugging the dongle before it might recognise it. Just struggling a bit, the point of the smart trainer was to cut down on faff so I can do sessions more easily, but it's been the opposite so far

  • What would cause these two graphs to be so different? The first is from a session I did last night (using the Elite Diret0), the other is from someone random I follow on Strava (device unknown).

i.e. why does the power track so smoothly on the second one? Is this related to the ~2.5% accuracy of the Direto perhaps?

  • They probably have a power smoothing function. Like the wahoo kickr.

  • No. Your graph looks a lot more normal than his one. If you increased the averaging period in your plot it would look smoother, (although not as crisp as your mates-I have no idea how that one is so crisp, but I suspect it's somewhat artificial)
