I'm a big fan of a mad frenchman called Michel Houellebeqc. Dark, brutally honest, very clever and IMO relevant to this strange world we live in.

Superprecise
Flatlander Just finished Charles Bukowski's Factotum which I liked.
Soon to start Jeff Noon's Falling out of cars" which I have know idea whether or not it's good or not...
if you've not already seen it check out the film of factotum. i think it's superb, great performance by matt dillon. only read bukowski's short stories, so not sure how it compares to the book though...
i havent read the book but saw the film.matt was good but i preferr Mickey rourkes performance as Buk in Bar Fly.

I've just read "Kill Your Friends" by John Niven. Very funny, very dark, the protagonist is v. much in the mould of Patrick Bateman from "American Psycho" - albeit with better taste in music....

I'm 83 pages through American Pyscho.
Loved the film and LOVING the book.

Just finished another James Ellroy book - White Jazz.
Brilliant and very dark.
His earlier novel, Black Dahlia, is slightly better.
Haven't seen the film yet. -

just finished reading Black Hawk Down. which is alot better than the film! (which i thought was rather good)
If you like action books, but are tired of Clancy/McNab. i recommend it. if you can find it for 50p at the charity shop (like me) its even better!

[sarcasm] how could one get tired of the literary genius that is Tom Clancy? [/sarcasm]

There was a thread about this; I can't seem to find it. I'd like to start it again 'cause there were a few decent leads.
I've recently finished "The Matter of Wales" (Jan Morris) which was a great read. Might be of interest only to those interested in Wales and/or British history.
Turns out Jan Morris used to be a man, but decided to be a woman and has the surgery to prove it, but that doesn't crop up in the book, so don't let it put you off. -

I really go for a bit of popular science, like Dawkins, Steve Jones et al., but "Chemistry of the Textile Industry" sounds a bit dry. I'm looking for recommendations rather than a reading list.
Perhaps this thread should be called "Read anything interesting lately? If so, please share your thoughts." -

oh then Haruki Murakami: Dance, Dance, Dance
or The Wind-up bird Chronicles. Then Ryu Murakami: Coin Locker Babies.
On top of that: Genome by Matt Ridley and Breaking the Spell by Daniel C Dennett.

Ra ra ra.
With a couple of degrees (one of them English lit, the other fractionally more/less useful), and probably less (and less booze intake) than at least a few other people on this site, I'd just like to suggest that as much as I love the idea of this thread, the reality is that lots of people put forward the idea of their favourite authors and this turns into a quagmire of favourite reads. That's the kinda shite that Facebook is for.
How's about: if you've just read something that rocked, or are just reading something that rocks your world then let's hear all about it. I mean, I'm reading Hunters of Dune. And I'm loving it (kind of). But htat doesn't mean I want to recommend it to anyone else out there (unless you too wasted years of your life with Frank Herbert - in which case my commiserations).
