'flex' by ran amitai from israel is one of the shortlisted design entries from more than
3000 participants in our recent designboom competition, 'seoul cycle design 2010',
organized in collaboration with seoul design foundation.the design of the compact city bike aims to achieve a holistic aesthetic by reducing
visual noise: the back fork is combined with the chain cover and the frame's form
is monolithic rather than a sum of different parts.designer's own words:
'flex' is a compact city bicycle. the intention of the design is to create a bicycle that has a whole form,
as opposed to a normal bicycle which has many parts that are completely separated in terms of aesthetics.
to achieve this, I did two things: one was to create a monoblock form instead of many mechanical
connections; and two, I combined the back fork with the chain cover for one element, which reduces
the visual noise and creates a new iconic look. the brakes are located in the back wheel and operated
by reverse-peddling. the handle bars are narrower than usual in order to achieve better transferability
in crowded urban conditions. the body is made of carbon fiber which was formed on top of the fixed
*mechanical elements and still allows access to change old parts. *How the hell did this get shortlisted for a design comp? Looks like terrible design. An urban bike totally made of custom parts and carbon fibre - how much is that thing gonna cost? How do you lock it up? ... and supposed to be practical but no mudguards, silly narrow handlebars, coaster brake. And so how do you access the chain for maintenance? And does it have some sort of ball joint at the top of the headtube, or does the whole massive stem and handbar sort of arc around as its turns? And wouldn't an urban bike be improved with some kinda lights and luggage options?

If you look at how far the hands are from the steering axis, it looks no worse that holding the brake hoods on a typical drop bar set up. If the manufacturing process can be got right, composites have the potential to be no more expensive than welding tubes together - we're used to the idea of composites being expensive because they are usually optimised for stiffness and light weight without much regard for cost, but it doesn't have to be that way. As a design prototype, of course it's missing the rack and mudguards and front brake you might want on a commutenger bike, but it's already as practical as all the hipster fixie skidder bikes people are already using. Locking it up is not such a big issue, as you're expected to carry bikes like that right up to the office. As concept bikes go, it's pretty inoffensive - at least it has hubs and a sensible drive train.

You know what's the worse thing about it?
It's no different to those shopper bike without mudguard.
far from innovative.

i think these (style) ones are pretty cool though. Might need some aesthetics/practicality help but I can see these being developed for time trials. would be very light as well...

i actually like this bike because its an idiot bike. ive got a real soft spot for idiot bikes. so in my opinion it belongs in porn.

I did a little sketch to represent what I mean.... Why not make one of these for track riding? Just a simple sprocket to sprocket system for the drive and no need for seatstays, chainstays, chain, forks etc..... It could shorten the wheelbase quite a lot too.

what about headtube/headset, how do you thin it can work*
*genuine question

I was thinking having a metal steerer with long bolt through it like with a normal ahead headset. Use that bolt to preload your tension and then tighten the "stem bolt" to hold the steerer in place. So the fork that is holding the wheel is acting like a (ahead style) stem too.
But to be honest I think those guys at Look with their new carbon frames have it figured out and the way they make that stem hinge should work in this case too.

Several reasons. Mostly the UCI wouldn't like it, but also making a drive to a centreless wheel is really hard when you have to gear up, you end up with a spur gear train which is dramatically less efficient than a simple roller chain as currently used. Centreless wheels also suffer from huge bearing friction compared with conventional hubs. Shortening the wheelbase is undesirable, as the front wheel would be off the ground even for a pursuit start, and the bike would be unmanageable for sprinting.

i was afraid you would say that.

i have said it before and i will say it again, there is a very good reason bicycle design has never really changed since the two triangle was invented.
bike snob said it first. all these avante garde flashy design shits should stay out of something they know nothing about.

I really like Steamrollers, I think there are wicked frames, but because it is chrome, doesnt mind is porn or anti
