Unless the guy is completely stupid and loves spending his money and time on buying and fitting new chains; i imagine it will be a URT suspension design. This was popular before all the new pro pedal technology happened in the mtb scene as it pretty simplistically reduced pedal feedback on the shock by mounting the bb really close to the pivot, but on the swing arm.

Unified rear triangle
The "Unified rear triangle" or "URT" for short, keeps the bottom bracket and rear axle directly connected at all times. The pivot is placed between the rear triangle and the front triangle so that the rear axle and bottom bracket move as one piece, and the saddle and handlebars move as another piece. This simple design uses only one pivot, which keeps down the number of moving parts. It can be easily modified into a single-speed, and has the benefit of zero chain growth and consistent front shifting. On the other hand, when the URT rider shifts any weight from the seat to the pedals, he or she is essentially standing on the swingarm, resulting in a massive increase in unsprung weight, and as a result the suspension tends to stop working. During braking, riders naturally brace themselves on the pedals,[citation needed] and combined with brake dive leads to more severe pitching, sometimes called "stinkbugging".[citation needed] Because of lockout and pitching, along with persistent suspension bob in low-pivot URTs, and a constantly changing saddle-to-pedal distance, the URT design has fallen out of favor in recent years.[3]

the nicest riding mountain bike i ever owned was a urt. rocky mountain pipeline. was heavy as but rode so fast and smooth for miles and miles. never bettered in my stable. matched by the blizzard perhaps but totally different and that didnt belong to me.

yes. the suspension stops working exactly when you want it to to work. (bum off the saddle over rougher terrain)
URT's are a pile of shite. a mate had a klein mantra. it's a LOL bike.
they don't make them any more because they were a bad design from a time when full suspension bikes were in their infancy. -

The suspension still works when you stand on the pedals. Think of the system as a beam with a sprung hinge in the middle, supported by the wheels at the two ends. When you're putting your weight on the saddle, you're effectively pushing down on the front half of the beam just in front of the hinge. When you put your weight on the pedals, you're pushing down on the rear half of the beam just behind the hinge. Either way, you're going to bend the beam. The suspension rate might change slightly, and there are a bunch of other reasons why a URT is shit, but it doesn't suddenly transform into a hardtail as soon as your butt lifts off the saddle.

I'm pretty sure it's not a URT (you can see where the downtube joins straight onto the BB shell), and the guy is completely stupid and has made himself a rigid bike which uses chain tension as a structural element.
