i dont see how a single speed bike with a low spinny gear is at all practical? maybe more practical than the usual hipster stuff round here, but that is in no way a practical bike

I must admit, I wouldn't have built it up single speed. But I'm guessing he's gone for a spinny one as he rides the bike loaded, where you need a easy gear to haul yourself and all your kit up hills.

My bike have similar GI* as the Surly above, partly because one; it's not a bike that you'd go fast on, two; carrying load as jammy said, will be easier with less GI, especially when I tend to use a trailer and three; it's easier to climb without getting out of the saddle.

*42/18 with 26 x 2.35 tyres, giving me a spinny 62 GI, need to get a 19t though.

Believe me when I says this that you'll find yourself using it more than you'd think.

Don't forget to find a good mounting system to hook the trailer to your bike, mine's claptrap at best, end up needing to hook it up after it came off the bike every now and then when I have a payload of 150lbs (max 50lbs).
