  • get a Nikon for sure, im really not a fan of the way Canon's feel, and on an even shallower note, the sound!

the only advantage of the d40x over the d40 is the megapixels, so if you arnt planning on blowing up the shots much, get the d40, and use the money you saved to get a better lens!

or save up and get a d50/d70 second hand! i have a d50 and its great, saving for a d300 tho, they are fking amazing!

  • roxy The best aid to being a good rider is being good at it, equipment is secondondary.

So true, didn't Lance say something like that too???

  • sorry to get back on subject.

The d40 recomendations should be model specific.

the cheapest ones rely on auto focus motors in the lenses. (glass)

A lot of aftermarket and som e niccor lenses dont have motors and rely on the af motor in the body.

I bougfht a coanon because people i know who were likely to be selling lenses had canons.
othjer thatn that, as gary says go to jessops and play. you'll love eitrher and only a few weeks after be telling people that niokons are ace, can
ons are shit (reverese if nesessary).

    Ps canons are nice
    :sniggers:

  • I have a Kodak p880, which was a fantastic buy when I bought it, now prices have come down, it seems less so....

All SLR manual features, amazing colour but noisy in low light if you leave ISO on auto....and it doesn't have a removable lens, but the one it comes with is ace.

the zoom flash you can buy to go with it is amazing too.

  • I've just been given a d100 body, lucky me. Looking for a lens to buy.

  • just been to jessops and held the d80 and 30d.

Much prefer the feel and weight of the canon in my hand over the nikon.

From what i gather thats pretty much what the difference is between the two, the results of either will be pretty much the same?

Mate is off to the us with work in a month, so ill get him to grab me one there. Ill just get him to un pack it so it looks like he hasnt just got it and flatten out all the packaging in his luggage!

Yeah, when he lost his ball.

  • I'm not going to make any recommendations, just clear up a few points and answer some questions:

    Other differences:

The Canon has faster continuous shooting (5.5fps vs 3fps, I think)

Canon have an "open" RAW format (Nikon patented theirs, although this may only apply to the higher end cameras)

Nikons can use (some) manual focus lenses without having to use stop-down metering

Not sure about the Nikons, but I'm pretty sure my Canon has a worldwide warranty (i.e. I don't have to get it fixed in the country of purchase)

Totally the wrong way round. Expensive lenses have motors in them, cheap ones may not.

All Canon lenses use motors, but of varying quality (i.e. USM is better than non-USM). Some Nikons do (AF-S I think?), but some Nikons have the screw drive that you need for older lenses. I don't think that lower end Nikons have the screw drive, meaning you could potentially lose auto-focus with some lenses.
