MrSmith "just preferred the ergonomics, features and glass."
why do people call lenses "glass" ?
been in the photography business 15 years and never heard a photographer call lenses "glass". i guess it's a geek forum thing like the word "fixie" which is equally obnoxious :-)You are an active member of an internet-based bicycle community, geek is relative.
As for the term 'glass' it's an incredibly important term and not one that is used instead of another term. The glass that goes into a lens is very important. The quality of it means more to a camera than just about any other single part of a camera.

can't help you with the choice of camera but if you need help with choosing a camera bag to put it in I can sort you out.

"You are an active member of an internet-based bicycle community, geek is relative.
it certainly is,I'm happy to be part of what is essentially an enthusiasts forum but i'm indicating a difference in terminology between professional and amateur, i was just interested in why and where the term came from.
i wonder if will hoy or his mechanic use the term "fixie"?"As for the term 'glass' it's an incredibly important term and not one that is used instead of another term. i agree the glass used is very important, things like resolution, sharpness, chromatic aberration, aspherics, MTF charts, low dispersion 'glass' (the fact that canon don't use lead in theirs) etc matter to me.
it just seems odd to say "i'm going to buy a new glass", "the new tilt and shift glass i brought for the canon is the dogs", " pass me the 70-200 glass", "that new image stabalised zoom glass from canon is the shizzle", " if the client want it changed i'm going to smash my glass over his head" . actually the last one would save me money :-) -

maybe it's an americanism?
not taking the piss (for a change!) but there's quite a few in the recording industry:
desk = board
jackfeild = patchbay
twats = metallicaand many more..

MrSmith
Max MrSmith - are you one of those people who could cause an argument in an empty house?
Think it's more an 'old photographer thing' - long before geeks or forums on the internet...
FFS.
I like 'fixi' - even more annoying...
if the house has an internet connection then yes.
i know lots of 'old' photographers who definately never used the term.
as for a wind up it's more a curiosity so no guarantee of being thrown into an apoplectic rage .
also you disagreed with my question/statement it seems you are too easy to wind up "FFS"
Curiosity here too: why in the middle of a useful discussion there is occasionally someone who for some very odd reason goes off on a tangent and starts accusing others of being 'obnoxious' merely for using a slang term be it 'glass' or 'fixie'.
And when one bites back they don't like it.
Seriously, if you have been into 'photography' for a while and never heard the term glass as a slang term then I'm puzzled but then pics of plug holes puzzle me too... but each to their own.
:)
PS:
it just seems odd to say "i'm going to buy a new glass", "the new tilt and shift glass i brought for the canon is the dogs", " pass me the 70-200 glass", "that new image stabalised zoom glass from canon is the shizzle", " if the client want it changed i'm going to smash my glass over his head" . actually the last one would save me money :-)
Never heard any of these myself either - it's more of a generic 'Nikon's glass is better than Canon's' etc.
Rather than "I say Giles, pass me the Super Spectra Coated three aspheric elements Super UD 17-40 lump of old *glass *dear boy..."

I wasn't accusing anyone of being obnoxious i was referring to the words glass and fixie, and included the very important smilie(that people seem to have missed)
threads go off on tangents all the time, my mind was jogged by "just preferred the ergonomics, features and glass." which caused me to ask the question. if i had posted the question in the coffee thread i could understand it causing confusion but this thread was concerned with photography. I thought it would be a good thread to ask on because it was not worth it's own thread.
I'm really sorry if it's confused anyone.i don't understand why you think i "don't like it" ? your assumptions as to what i do and don't like are incorrect.
Seriously as i have been into 'photography' for a while i have never heard the term "glass" used as a slang term apart from on forums in the last year or so, i'm puzzled, but then people who chose to drive 5 miles to work puzzle me too... each to their own

I've always been happy with my D100 (still working strong 6 years on). You can probably pick them up for £100 now.

mrssmith and rpm, do you like sit in your lounge room and discuss your posts b4 you send them?!?

I've got a nikon d70, like it a lot. My housemate's got a d40x, partly because I encouraged him to buy Nikon, and he seems to keep finding features missing on it vs the d70. Exposure bracketing is the most annoying, but also flash commander mode, and a few other bits and pieces. No real technical reason for the omissions, it's just to encourage people to buy the more expensive models...
Have a play in the shop - most of the reason I got a d70 against a canon 350d was because it felt good in my hands...

Got the Nikon D70 too. My first Digi SLR.
I'd try and stretch to a 2nd hand D70 or D80 if I were you. Apparently the bodies are better quality.
I'm sure you won't be disappointed with either though.
The one thing I have learn't is that a decent lens makes all the difference. Just got a 50mm prime for my D70 and it's so sharp it blows my zoom lens out the water.
Have fun!

i don't know much about photography but i take a lot of pics. I've got a D80 that i bought from gumtree. It was basically new and had the 18 - 135 lens with it. I think i saved about 150 quid on it but buying secondhand electronics is always a bit of a punt... I got a nikon as i could use the flash and lens' of my f100. As far as the ergonomics and semiotics of the different bodies go i think you'll be happy and get used to whatever you buy. Also if you buy secondhand and decide quickly you don't like it you can probably sell it for the same price you paid for it.
Just my t'pence worth...

The best aid to being a good rider is being good at it, equipment is secondondary, let's shut down the forum, all this talk about gear is totally useless.

These cameras are practically the same price in $ as they are in £.
Might get my mate to get me one next time he is over with work and sneak it back.
Poxy rip off britain.

the actual profit margin on cameras in this country is tiny it's the duty that pushes the prices up but compared to the rest of europe prices are lower here.
just be careful with the warranty if you buy from the u.s as if there are any problems it will probably have to go back there. -
