  • I thought the drip brew styles have more caffeine? I'd have thought the process of making instant coffee would similarly give higher amounts. [source: wiki]

Yeah I only feel the buzz from drip coffee.

Instant coffee contains as much of the bean as possible ($$$) so you're probably ingesting a shit ton of coffee solids.

I wonder how much caffeine is left in the inch-thick puck you bin after pulling a decent espresso.

  • Caffeine content is relative to the amount of time the coffee is brewed for - filter and press having the most caffeine and espresso actually having less (the confusion stemming from the strong taste of espresso leading people to think it has more caffeine).

  • Looks like we shall have to limit the amount of stops then. decaf isn't an option in my book.

Perhaps we pick the ones best located to make it a relatively nice ride as well?

The roast has a lot to do with it. A continental roast having that stronger, usally unbalanced and bitter taste having the less caffeine.

  • Was at Cadence yesterday, they use Nude. It's one I'd add to the great list above

  • We could dp the bike shop/cafe ride again Alex

  • I'm totally up for this ride! I can only do Saturdays at the moment though... Decided it is finally time to get involved in this thread, Jim came home last night to find me looking up colloids & emulsions, and exactly what happens to the milk when you stretch it.... haha.

Anyone had a syphon coffee? I saw a video recently & I'm completely in love! What an absolutely beautiful piece of equipment. (Spot the chemist, over here! haha) Where can I get one (coffee, I mean, much as I would LOVE to invest in the kit!)? Prufrock?

  • I shall be a new father in need of caffeine so if I can get a pass, I'll be in.

Oh. Worth passing along as well - http://blogs.villagevoice.com/forkintheroad/2012/08/how_not_to_order_espresso.php

I think Velocio has a coffee siphon.

  • It's worth bearing in mind the sort of cafes/places/streets that will be able to accommodate lots of bikes...I'd probably take places like Lantana, Flat White and Fernandez & Wells off for that reason (not to mention the fact that I think we can be more imaginative than that!).

Caravan Kings Cross might be a nice stop off, especially if it's a sunny day.

  • could add flat cap coffee at Borough Market for the same reason - and nice (if a bit pricey) for a lunch stop

Hehe, that doesn't surprise me! If my kitchen was bigger...

  • Anyone have any experience with the Gaggia Brera (Bean to cup machine)?

  • socks, prufrock used to sell them for sure. You could also try Notes on St Martins Lane.

Best of all, they're not as expensive as they look (though the burner/heat source can be a bit of cash. The ones they use at Prufrock are lovely but bloody $$$$$)

  • They have halogen beam heaters, don't they? (They video I saw was on their website, hence why I assumed you must be able to get it from them! heh) Wish I'd discovered it before I finished uni, I could have made my own out of the glassware cupboard....

I think the focus here is on great coffee rather than coffee at cycle cafes, what do other people think though?

Where is there? Lock 7, LMNH, Cyclelab, MyCycle, Rapha CC...

  • I would have thought that provided we all eat, drink plenty of water, keep moving, **and don't combine coffee with alcohol **(well not before midday) we will be just fine.

    Out

  • Googles caffeine limit

Depends on the person but about 80 - 100 cups for an adult is the lethal dose (150-200 milligrams per kilogram of body mass).

What about Ozone? I've not been yet but heard a lot of good things about it.

You know you can bring a lock with you and walk a few yards!

Sometimes I have enough trouble finding suitable locking for one bike, let alone a huge pile! It's worth considering!

  • Coffee Ride October 2012, venue suggestions:

    Caravan, Kings Cross
    Cadence, Anerley Hill,SE19
    Ozone, Leonard Street, EC2
Notes Music Coffee, St Martins Lane, WC2
    Flat Cap, Borough Market
Coleman Coffee - Unit 5, Dockley Road, Bermondsey, Sat only 8:30-3:00
Jamaica Wine House, site of London’s first coffee house, founded in 1652 - could be interesting? Closed at weekends and doesn't serve coffee.
The Royal Exchange, trading centre for tea and coffee from 17th century. no obvious coffee here, besides we have enough suggestions
    Prufrock, Leather Lane
Goswell Road and/or Bermondsey Street Coffee
    Brunswick House Cafe, Vauxhall
    Federation, Brixton
    Algerian Coffee Store, Soho
Flat White, Soho - v small/no bike parking
    LMNH, Old Street - unoriginal?
    Kaffeine, Great Titchfield Street
    ScooterCaffè, Lower Marsh SE1
Rapha Club, Brewer Street (AKA DJ's second home and 'Mother Ship')
Fernandez & Wells, Beak Street, W1- v small though
    Climpson & Sons, Broadway Market
    Caravan, Exmouth Market

If people are OK with the above list I shall set up a Doodle so we can vote on which 8-10 (?) we visit. Then we can plot a route.

Also I think the consensus is Saturdays are best - how about 20 October?

  • ^^^Now that is a quality list

  • I like the idea of meeting at LMNH, but I think it would be nice to try and branch out a bit! Sweet for the Saturdays, but I'm on Dorset on the 20th.... boooo.

  • ^^^Now that is a quality list

Quality list of swanky, trendy hipster hang outs of which only about half of them serve decent espresso.
