  • If I cut the top off my coffee and put it in water, will it develop roots (like Lemon Grass), or die?

Try some rooting compound, and maybe not take the top, but a bit off the side? Losing the top may stop it growing upwards.

  • That was part of the idea- make it more bushy, at the moment it looks like a rather sad Christmas tree.

    Get chopping then.

  • I have the fear

To be honest, your plant does look a bit tall and gangly. If it gets much higher it won't be easy to bring it indoors. This link talks about encouraging outward growth by clipping the top, not that I can vouch for the advice: http://www.gardenguides.com/77978-grow-coffee-indoors.html

  • Big movements in my world of coffee:
    1)Discovering Yirgacheffe
2)Learning how to make filter properly.

For those interested, the biggest tips I've learned are:
Water off the boil (92.5 deg c I've been told),
Rinse filter with boiling water before adding coffee (rinses out starch, improves filtering)
Soak grounds in filter (with boiled water) and leave for about 30 sec before adding rest of water.
Fill filter all the way to the top and keep it topped up until you've added all your water.

I'm sure a lot of this is common knowledge but it's made a big difference for me.

The filter cones are also stupidly cheap, £2ish.

The Swissgold permanent metal filters are nice but pricey; don't absorb oils produced and no ongoing costs for filters. I got the one-cup version Whittards used to sell for work and travel but they have near doubled in price since I got them.

  • got instructions?

Cobbled together from various sources on the web (the jimseven blog is good) but grind the beans to coarse filer profile and then into a cafetiere with cold bottled water. I left it overnight and then ran it though the aeropress just to make sure there were no bits left.

I've been looking at getting this http://www.coffeehit.co.uk/hario-cold-brew-coffee-pot-600ml/p1020 but was trying to avoid buying more coffee making paraphernalia and this method seems to work well..

  • Good espresso in the North Laine in Brighton (Trafalgar Street end)? Ideally sit-in. Even better with Wifi.

  • The place on the road up (trafalgar street) to the train station, LH side walking up the hill

    Coffee at 33

  • Sounds perfect : ) I'm moving into number 38. (The Hove gaff fell through)

  • ?!?!

  • But also a lot of cycling folk go to that shop.

  • Top banana.

It's only for a while - no more than a year and I'll be up several days a week. I need some fresh air and space while I build up some new clients - living with Mike Hunt and his DVDs isn't cutting it for me. I figure Saturday's spent rolling through the downs are better than ruining tires around London's famous London.

  • I wonder what a nice Brighton>Winchester route would be?

  • I meant what happened with the rad place in Hove?

  • Landlord dilly dallied and then decided he actually didn't want to move. S'alright. This place is bigger, if less impressive (i.e. it doesn't have a guest 'wing') But a top location for catching trains.

Three-leg Saturday jaunt? Your gaff, to mine to Winch and back?

  • I was thinking Saturday London>Brighton, Sunday Brighton>Winchester.

Which would work best with someone to drive my car for me, so as to have clothes etc.

  • I wonder if I could teach one of the cats how to drive a Volvo

  • It can be done. Alternatively you could develop their teamwork and get all of your cats to drive a Volvo.

One for pedals, one for the wheel and one for gears/handbrake/changing the radio.

  • Higgs hates Tesla, I think they might crash the car whilst bickering.

  • espresso machine freecycle - ascaso arc. (funny-looking machine, but quality brass boiler)

some issues with the gasket above the portafilter. replaced the gasket but it keeps popping down over the portafilter rim under pressure. maybe it's a crappy gasket. maybe something's bent. the arrival of a second-hand rancilio put an end to repair attempts. perhaps someone else can do a better job.

free. pick up in swiss cottage. drop me a line.

  • may know someone who is interested, will email him

  • Any one know of a good London mobile coffee vendor who could come along to this year's London Open?
