i'm off to check out St. Ali, roaster / cafe from Melbourne (on Clerkenwell Rd). Looks like they had alot of money to spend on the place — they even have a Slayer

Just recieved my first ever order from Has Bean, some Jailbreak and some Bolivia Machacamarca de Berengula.
I ordered them yesterday, at about 3.15 in the afternoon, standard Royal Mail postage, and the order arrives before lunchtime, less than 24 hours later.
I've not even tried the coffee yet, but so far I am impressed!
Also - the smell just opening the jiffy bag was coffeetastic.

popped in there - looks nice…
grabbed a flat white, was a bit 'meh', microfoam not supersilky, espresso a bit thin. But, they have just opened and things will take a while to bed in, be interesting to see what roasts they do [they are roasting on site]
Not down with the current vogue to use less punchy roasts for milk based drinks, bean noticing this a lot recently, if I get a flat white I still want a good hit of dark, roasty coffeeness,

It's lovely actually. Didn't try any espresso but had a pourover (the Rwandan roast). Very clean, fruity, fresh — perfect for spring. It was very good, but they said it could be better.
Obviously they're still quite new here so i'm sure it will take a few weeks at least to get their coffees they way they want.
Was lucky enough to grab a free lunch too. They're nice fellas.

Great isn't it - and yet do you remember six months or so ago when I asked on here where was decent locally (but not as far to walk as Dose/Espresso Room etc)
Then all the new joints sprung up at once. Fan bloody tastic.

I finally got round to ordering from Hasbean. Have to say, after all I've read, I was pretty underwhelmed with the Jailbreak; doesn't seem to matter how I make it, it always comes out tasting weak and wishy washy, without any real flavours. I'll keep at it because I can only assume I'm doing something wrong. Love their Brazil Fazenda Divino Espírito Santo Catuai though.
Should have a delivery of Magnus Backstedt's coffee coming today!
I was underwhelmed with Maggies coffee

Someone mentioned going to a new coffee shop near the office this morning as I was just arriving so I tagged along. turns out st. ali is on the same block of buildings as my office.
Got a rwanda pourover and am really enjoying it, not sure if the staff were still in early-morning-not-woken-up-yet mode though because all I got out of them was "what do you want?", "that's going to take at least 4 minutes" and "here's your coffee"
y u no give me the spiel? :/
as it's right on my doorstep though I'll no doubt be in there fairly often anyways.

Where's this place? Haven't seen it yet despite working probably 200 yards from it I imagine.

^^ Was it busy? Could explain the shortness.
-
• #3889
there's no excuse for "shortness".. It's a service industry.

^^^it's on clerkenwell rd on opposite corner of junction with st johns st to benugos (well a few doors down from the corner but you can see it from there).
the outside looks a little bit like an entrance to a bar/restaurant though.
^^it was just me/my two workmates in there so not rushed off their feet. but I've not taken it to heart
^It wasn't rude or anything but it was more a starbucks kind of hospitality rather than the chatty service from the other decent coffee places in the area.

Ta. That'd be why I haven't seen it - disgustingly far to walk.
I'll go at lunch.

Roasted a batch of Jabberwocky last night.
My popcorn roaster is now working perfectly with the aid of some ducting and a jam jar with the bottom cut off. The bowl of water catches all the chaff so I can roast indoors. -

^ What the hell!!! brilliant. I have one of those popcorn makers - definitely trying that.

People have been roasting with popcorn machines for ages, have a google -there's loads of info

I also have one of these and will be conducting experiments at the end of next month when I have a bit more time.

Its grown on me. With the first couple of shots, I think the grind was not fine enough, and it didnt seem that amazing.
With a slightly finer grind, it is coming through a lot darker and richer but still not bitter, and I'm really enjoying it now.

makes sense - mine was pre-ground for espresso, home grinder aquisition being WIP.
Let us know how it is, was pondering buying some a while ago
