Right, tried it again - no need to rotate this time. It's not particularly clear as the lighting was pretty poor, but you get the idea. Watch out for the spurter around 25 seconds - as you can tell from the angle, that one got me good and proper...

My god...are you stalking me BDW? I open the thread and the last post is from you.
Anyway...yes. Thanks very much. The 100gs of the Guatemalan stuff was spot on this morning. The banana is stronger once brewed. With Demerara natch, FTW!

Tamping more than anything - on my first try yesterday there was a fair bit of channelling and spurting. Today I gave the tamper a bit of a turn when pushing down, and there seemed to be much less channelling.
It's also pretty cool just to see it happening...

Jambles - Monmouth for the beans, i get my regular order and then 100g of something different - the staff in there are tops and they'll grind a sample for you to try

i went to whittard last night...after being denied a proper coffee machine for my new office and they have chocolate covered coffee beans ;) I have only ever had plain chocolate ones but they have 3 different types and I got the ones with ginger in the chocolate. If they do one with chili in the chocolate I'd be in Heaven.

I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get the gloopy looking stream I've seen on other naked portafilter vids, but in spite of a bit of spurting it was strangely satisfying. I took people saying it tasted better with a pinch of salt, but there does seem to be a different texture...
Oh, and has anyone seen the tags on this thread lately?
A bit of spurting often leads to something strangely satisfying.

Pulling a great shot after hacking up your PF is a great feeling. So stripey.... Nice looking shot there Mooks. Are you grinding the coffee yourself? Bit more light would be useful next time.

Just remembered I took a few photos of my espresso shots a while back, here is a taste (ok its the best one!)

The coffee's straight out of a tin of illy - but I'm finding it a bit lacking in terms of the oils, so I was quite glad to get just a little bit of tiger striping before it started blonding.
Yep - shame about the dark video. I'll have the lights on next time and it'll all go wrong I'm sure...

@ Mooks: That's a great shot for pre-ground coffee, you got good dosing skills.
Buy better coffee though!
@ Dixon: 1 ticket to the crotchless portafilter gunshow if you please.

Oh man - I've just messed my underpants!
Just pulled an amazing shot - started off black, and just as I was getting worried it wasn't going to improve - GLOOP! - this huge drop of crema comes out and the tiger striping begins.
I'll tell you what guys - either make or buy a bottomless portafilter. It'll add a whole other dimension to your coffee.

Now a days I only use the naked PF to hold the blind filter. But it's a valuable diagnostic tool while learning!is the naked portafilter to practice your grind and tamping?
What you see is the outcome of the hole process; beans, roast, age, grind, dose, distribution, tamp and a range of brew and machine related parameters. -

Hand grinding makes you happy:
Good vibes - Nice bus!Yeah freezer is good because the conditions are totally inert. Lots of blind cupping has been done comparing beans frozen for up to 3 months with fresh beans and it has mostly been impossible to differentiate.
Not everyone would agree about that!... or if you home roast. (did I just admit that?)
Yes! What kind of setup do you use? This add is a nice little introduction to what's going on before we buy our fresh roasted coffee:

Lots of pretentious this and that... fucking moronic tea drinker cunts.
How is spooning some instant into a mug and adding hot water pretentious?
Fuck you tea drinking scum, fuck you in the eye sockets!
