  • I'm going to Monmouth tomorrow to get preground for my cafetiere, any recommendations or should I just go for whatever is on offer?

Also, will I be ok getting 2 weeks worth or should I just get enough for 1?

Go for the Sumatra Wih Bakong - real ripe, bold very sweet fruit, not at all tart. Turns into strawberry milkshake if you add a drop of full bore milk.

Or go with the El Salvador Finca La Suiza if you like a brighter more elegant brew. This one has a nice nippy white apple and grape finish.

  • Fuck they sound great Bombcup.. Any suggestions for beans for Stove top? I've been on Bolivian High roast from Algerian coffee shop for too long and fancy a change

  • For stovetop try the India Balmaadi, all rich caramel with a nice clean finish, or the heavy pungent blackcurranty Kenya Gethumbwini AB dark roast

  • Monmouth?

  • Yep, I do work for them in the interest of transparency. Just dropped out my last roast for the week.

  • No problem.. Thanks as ever. Both sound amazing. I'll swing by seven dials later and pick some up.

Any comment on how this would turn out in a french press? And anything else you would recommend in the same vein (blackberry, blackcurrant etc).

    Thanks.

  • Thanks Bombcup, they sound great I think I'll go for the Sumatra Wih Bakong.

  • and for special occasions

    Thanks.

The India and Kenya are both great in french press, it's my favourite brew method and it suits all coffees. For blackberry fruit you need a good Colombia, which is something we're really struggling with right now. We bought a whole microlot to replace the lovely Pasto but it hasn't passed muster so far and may have to be sold on.

Another rich full coffee is the Costa Rica Los Manantiales which has a heavy caramelised orange top end, and the Las Lajas also from Costa Rica which is more into the tobacco and nutty area.

  • Back in the game. Just bought my first bag of beans in about 4 months and I've rinsed the whole thing in a matter of days. Feels good to be pulling shots again and not tolerating burnt / underextracted coffees at chains in train stations and airports...

  • Great, thanks again for that. I look forward to trying a good Colombian at some point in the future. Will probably get some of the Kenyan for now, although the Las Lajas sounds great too...

  • Nice new logo you've got for your business there bombcup…

    :^]

  • I wonder who did that?

  • Spotted in Morrisons - Taylor's Hot Java Lava

Reminded me of uni when I used to be able to drink a mug (8 shots) of espresso made with that stuff and then go to sleep. Ahh, student days....

Put some in my maker overnight, but it's as I remembered. Harsh as hell. Kept me going most of the day though.

One of the nicer commonly-stocked (OTP?) coffees I've found is Lavazza Crema e Gusto. Comes out quite nice in my stovetop maker.

btw, there's a catering supply shop on the east side of Stoke Newington High St some way north of the police station. That's where I got the stovetop and they had an espresso machine or two if you fancied dropping a wodge. No idea if they were good value, but maybe more hardwearing than your typical Argos or John Lewis stock.

  • where can i get a tamper from in london?
it's a birthday present, want to spend £20-£25

www.coffeehit.co.uk in Brockley, not sure about anywhere else

  • So I'm away with work staying in hotels this week, no espresso for me! With me I brought an aeropress, a Hario Skelton grinder and a bag of Square Mile Coffee 'Capao'. It is an incredible coffee. So sweet, smooth and moreish. A perfect antidote to the terrible shit thegermans serve up!

  • bollocks.
went to pick my bike up in clerkenwell today and swing by espresso room for a bag of ground square mile autumn espresso. they were shut.
picked up some monmouth espresso on the way home and it's not fine enough, dosed it up and lots of tamp pressure and still a 5 second pour.

    no espresso for me :-(

it tastes fine in a cafetiere so not all bad.

what are the ones with a convex base like? can't really stretch to a reg barber one so it will be one of the espresso gear ones.
it's going to be used with a cubika

  • Have you seen the new Costa add with the monkeys making coffee? Paging BDW....

  • I normally use a stove top percolator and can successfully make coffee so strong that it needs hosing down with milk before a normal human man can consume it.

    What am I doing wrong?
