@dancing james I had the exact same issue with mine, including getting hold of a suitable socket. Once you’ve stripped the whole machine, taken photos so you can remember how to rewire, pulled the old heating element out, found a bit of tape to make sure the threads don’t leak, refitted, reconnected the wires and put the case back together it’s quite a quick job (it took me almost an entire day!)

I don’t think so looking at the picture of yours - I’ve got an ECM barista - but the internals look very similar.

My Dr Herman's head shop scales died and it is now a tea shop so got these off YB + some beans. Quite excited about using them tomorrow morning.

My gaggia mdf started smoking this morning when making my usual restorative.

Not sure if totally fucked. If I pull it apart is there anything obvious to look for? Or just bin it and move on

I’ve got a set of these, they’re ideal without being mega expensive. Only slight gripe is that the timer stops if you remove the thing you’ve got on the scales. Not a problem for espresso, but annoying for filter.

If anyone knows how to fix this do let me know!

Gotta give a shoutout to James Gourmet Roasters. I've recommended them here before based on feedback from my Dad (originally praised by Hoffman in one of his videos). My dad brought some coffee from them when he visited me last week and it was delicious. Not usually a profile I'd go for but this Simply Brazil was really great as both filter and espresso. And only 18.50 for 1KG. If you get through a lot of coffee, it's a great deal.

A large proportion of my coffee comes from him (and has done for years). He a superb roaster.

they are one of those roasters who manages to get 110% out of the beans.
A good friend of mine who owns Caffeine magazine said he was the ‘coffee roasters coffee roaster’ or did Hoffman say that? either way the beans are very good value for money but if you like dark roasts/ashy/burnt flavours then look elsewhere.

the Caffeine podcasts are worth a listen BTW, Covid meant the magazine had to be mothballed but the podcasts are very well produced and interesting for both engaged consumer (coffee geeks) as well as those just getting into coffee.
they also feature Lady Velo/Joules whom some of you will know of already through cycling.

I keep meaning to try their coffee. Will order some of that after my current supply runs out

Who are the go to roasters for a bean by post subscription?
I dose 14g and drink c.8 at home espresso’s a week so about 250g a fortnight.
I like variety so someone who mixes it up a little with no effort or input from me.

Has Bean is good if you like lighter roasts. I have had a monthly subscription with them for years and never had a bag I didn't like.

Edit: Yellow Bourbon also excellent; as the monthly Has Bean is less than half what we get through, I order from YB regularly too.
