Yep. I hover between 1.6- 1.7 with single click increments. It genuinely depends on how humid it is that day. With the same coffee yesterday I was at 1.6 but today I was smack bang between 1.6 and 1.7. Last week I was at 1.7. All on the same coffee.

Pretty much! I shudder to think how much coffee I'd waste seeking perfection!

Interesting, time will tell how mine behave, but I suspect pretty similarly!
Compared to preground (even if ground very well in house rather than supermarket pre ground) the difference is night and day. Went down a click on the second round and got a great pour and very lovely tasting shot. Chuffed and looking forward to trying with better beans since I couldn't get hold of my first choice yesterday evening 👍

Honestly, I'm much more likely to try to dissuade than persuade people to make espresso at home. Unless you've got a pretty decent idea on what you're doing, you'll likely be making some pretty sub-standard coffee regardless of how much you spend on beans and machines (which is at least around a £500 initial outlay. Unless you're buying second-hand in which case you need to know what you're doing, or get lucky that you don't pick up a dud).

I lost the handle for my porlex when we moved house. It’s the old pentagon drive version. Couldn’t find a handle for toffee and a replacement handle is £15. So ordered a hand grinder from Aliexpress which uses the same handle for $9 2 weeks ago. Turned up today, perfectly decent grinder for filter and as im waiting to fix the Vario I can now use the porlex for espresso.

A bit late, but I'm sure those pentagonal bits are the same dimensions as the Hario ones. Not sure if you looked for Hario as well as Porlex ones, but just in case anyone else finds themselves in the same situation!

I have a spare hario handle (hex), in case anyone is in similar need.

Just had a look and it looks they're a combo of hex, penta and slotted handles. So probably not that much easier to come by to be honest!
Yeah, those penta Portlex handles are terrible, I think the newer hex ones are an improvement.

What the hell is this? Dual-spout pour over?
-
• #20565
I think someone has confused this with a double spouted portafilter 😅

I thought coffee machines were expensive. Finding a decent small grinder for not massive money is difficult

Aye, he sold to Ozone a while back and was less directly involved from that point. Mind you by then he was merely the figurehead, most of the day to day running was done by Dale, who’s been there for a decade or more. Afaik Dale is GM of Hasbean now

What does everyone do with the left over beans from a packet, when there isn't enough to make a coffee and you're moving onto a new roast? I've been grinding them for the flower beds, but wondering if there's a better use...
Because it’s going to take 3 tries to get it right?
: )
