Yet I feel a bit more wired after fewer cups of coffee through the technivorm than more cups of coffee with french press which steeps for ages (because who really has the patience for the Hoffmann method ;))
I had a scare a moment ago when I went to make another round on the technivorm to cater to some guests over this evening. Picked up the bag of beans I opened this morning to pour into the scales/wilfa and only about 3 beans came out. Thought I'd got through 250g already - thankfully it was a 150g bag. Still, 225g from 3 runs of the machine - about 10-12 cups.
Coffee can be a fucking expensive hobby/habit. That said, as, speak of the devil, James Hoffmann told me in an interview a few years ago it's really one of the cheapest luxuries:

Over the Christmas I've been drinking 3 Americanos a day @ 21g per cup. Hadn't thought about it till now but that's probably a little on the high end!

3-5 coffees on a workday is easily done for me.

3 brews (~60g) my daily limit, most days 2 at most though. #lightweight

Thankfully you get served single-shots though.

^ not when I work at home. where I can get a decent coffee ;)

Had a minor coffee argument with my dad over Christmas. He thinks filter coffee is shit and Italian espresso is the best thing ever because it's the 'original' espresso and strong. At least he no longer drinks Starbucks..

should have offered to make him some toast, then burnt the shit out of it.

Best supermarket pre-ground coffee for a French press? I like natural Guatemalans... they have them in Sainsburys right?

Specifically Sainos? I was in Waitrose over Xmas and had a decent selection.
Pretty sure Modern standard is the best you’ll find at Sainsbury’s or potential one of their own branded jobbies

I had some MS the other week - really impressed.

I really, really like the Cafedirect Machu Picchu from Sainsburys in a filter. I'm no connoisseur but I thought very tasty.

Has anyone got a chemex? Thinking about buying one - are they recommended?
-
• #14041
Yes and yes.
To be honest, the main source of improvement over other pour over methods is the better filters. Though I also like being able to make a litre and a bit in a single brew when required.

It's a luxury brewer. Looks and feels really nice. The main difference vs V60 is that the filter is thicker, so you'll get a cleaner, brighter cup. IMO it's a perfect match with fruity, floral African coffees.

Chemex is great if a few people at home/in work are drinking. I'm generally the only one drinking filter at home so prefer the Aeropress or my Hario drip pot (similar to the v60)
You do get a nice clean cup though.
I've got one of the Chemex with the handle which while not as aesthetically please is much nicer to use/pour than the standard Chemex.

Just to mix it up a bit:

Nice. Do you guys get folded or non folded filters?

Interesting read. Everything I've looked at has been really positive so far...

Yeh, definitely an inflammatory troll title but as with most of his writing in coffee there's reason behind it once you dig in.
This might have been posted before, but his blog post on hand pours and extraction is excellent and the depth of detail throughout the many comments and replies is great too.

Are a 40 pack of no.2 filtropa filter papers of use to anyone on here?
Having a cupboard clear out and they were bought in error when I started out with my v60 (I think they're meant for Kalita Waves). Drop me a message with your address and I'll pop them in the post. Ta.

Did anyone take these?
Don't even want to think about my intake 😆 if you're looking at caffeine content, generally the longer the contact time between coffee/water, the more caffeine. So filter (generally) has a higher caffeine content than espresso.
