Haven't tried anything yet but will have a good poke around when I have some spare time. Good suggestion.

I bought one as not working on eBay, had to replace the thermostat, but otherwise cleaning the contacts brought the switch back to life!

I was given one and my wife won't let me get rid of it (she uses it for decaf, which she doesn't have everyday). I've ordered the "intense" portafilter and some better coffee to experiment with.
The packaging still bugs me. -

I was wondering if the thermo broke and then the thermofuse went in sympathy.
Gonna spend some quality time with a multimeter...when I have some quality time
Or maybe I should just buy a new one :/

the new gaggia classics are shit apparently. i toyed with the idea of replacing mine when it was misbehaving, everything i read made me decide to spend a whole day degunking it instead.

Once you've found the problem they are very easy to sort.
If I can do it etc etc -

Agreed, how are Rancilio Silvias these days? Surely a better option.

Aha! I should have known there'd be a coffee thread on here :)

Spent a bit of money on my 17 year old brasilia recently. Leaky boiler, heater element had corroded away and all three thermostats blew simultaneously. Heating it up in the morning is suddenly a lot quicker!

I spent a day earlier this year at Square Mile with the Coffee Forum UK people, biggest thing I took away from talks with James Hoffman and co was to use bottled water over filtered.
The essential Waitrose stuff was recommended on the basis of it's mineral content etc...

Came across a Sage Grinder Pro on Coffee Forums UK t'other day. Might be worth a look to see if it's still going.

Thanks! It makes coffee, not sure it's awesome but I like it. It's nice to be able to fix stuff and not have to bin it.
