  • err, yeah, good point, not sure... cant remember. i'll ask him and get back to you... though he did say he only had black hubs in stock at the moment(which he said were £40), and that he'd have to find out about good silver ones: any recommendations?

  • Royce are nice. If he offers to build up any rims onto a pair of Royces for £200, say yes and give him the money immediately.

  • Van Damage ok cool. done a bit more scouting out over the weekend and the guy i'm using: Adam from Perlie Rides(http://www.perlierides.com/) will be doing me both wheels for about 200 he reckons... I asked for hubs, rims(pref without brand names all over them) and spokes all in silver, and nice too, and that was his quote... does that sound reasonable to you? or do you reckon i should buy my own bits and pay one of you lot for a special massage and candle-lit bath affair?

£200 is the price of a BLB build with formula hubs on deep-v's. for that money you could build a bullet proof wheelset, with goldtecs onto open pro's or whatever rim.

  • Van Damage,
That sounds like a lot to spend! x

  • Just decide on a hub from one of the many hub thread decide on a rim from one of the rim threads then use spoke calc to workout spoke length, or use one of the spoke calculators, (google will help finding both). Then you have all the parts and you can have ago building the wheels or then ask someone to build them for you for about 10 -15 a wheel. IT is a worth while learning experience.

  • oh god, my brain is imploding: the more I find out about what goes into making decent wheels the more I feel paralysed by how much more there is to learn and understand, so the less i feel qualified to make any decision at all.

hubs: i should be looking up track or fixed hubs right? is there any other technical term i should be looking under? and I think i should be looking for ones without sealed bearing units? otherwise i can never get in there and sort them out if they go wrong.

rim wise: mavic open pros seem to be the shizzle: but why?

  • thankyou for holding my hand by the way.

  • because they're strong, reliable and relatively light. Eyeletted so they're easy to build, and they're a teensy bit aero.

  • open pro's have re-inforced eyelets. sealed vs non-sealed, is really up to you. cheaper hubs will not be sealed, and over time crap gets into the hub and gets messy( eg system-x/ambrosia/zenith RRP £49 pair). sealed units eg goldtec, use sealed bearings and will last for-ever but are more expensive (RRP for a pair £125)

Yes track, fixed ,double fixed all the terms that I can think of.

I would go for sealed hubs unless you will only ride in the dry or don't mind regularish servicing of your hubs. Proper track hubs and b.b e.t.c are all non sealed because it make them role smoother hence faster, which is all that matters when your ride around a velodrome.

Openpros are light weight rims. Also all rims are just an extruded peice of metal bent to form a loop. Cheaper rims are pinned together. Better rims are welded together then machined down so as to clean up the surface. Openpros are welded.

  • oh yeah plus what dogs says about reinforce eyelets.

  • Hey Van Damage, I have absolutely nothing to offer on this thread other than to say:

Dogs, you'd best build up some wheels for my mate Van Damage when you are drinking on Thursday nights, or else I will be M A D. Once she gets all the bits then let's get it happening. (BTW I am coming to Thursday beer festy this week. I promise)

Seriously, I think you guys met at Rollapoluza which is when I convinced Beth (Van Damage) to come and join our merry internet band. We need to get her ride sorted so that she can come and rock polo and night rides. Mainly because she is about as ace as anyone I know.

    See you tonight Beth.

  • mashton (BTW I am coming to Thursday beer festy this week. I promise)

Ahh, OK, so, ummm, I kinda forgot that it is Valentine's day.

    Next week....

    So had I.

  • so you're a chic. well that's a different story :p

mashton, is she your mrs or just one of the g/f's?!?

  • dogsballs so you're a chic. well that's a different story :p

Haha, I was saying to Van Damage that making it known that you're a lady is the quickest/easiest way to get stuff done for you without having to lift a finger... too true!

  • Fucking men. Always thinking with their nether regions.

  • I thought that was just wishful thinking?

Prob missing something here, dogs, but I thought Formulas were sealed.

    Well the bearings anyway.

  • true, but aren't they just cartridge bearings, and not actually sealed like the goldtec/phil ones?!?! could be wrong.

  • dogsballs true, but aren't they just cartridge bearings, and not actually sealed like the goldtec/phil ones?!?! could be wrong.

They're sealed, if not the greatest quality.

So far as I'm aware, its a standard 6000 series bearing. Looks like a 6000-2RS to my eyes (ie a 6000 cartridge bearing with 2 Rubber Seals).

The whole "Phil Specced" thing got me looking into it.

The reason for my question is I'm wondering if I'm missing some other sealing or for the sake of about six notes per hub I can upgrade to top quality SKF sealed bearings and near Goldtec reliability.

Ha Ha. I was in the pub with Beth last night and predicted exactly this response. Love it.

No, she is not my 'missus' . We're just good friends. Well I think we are, she might hate me and be using me to get closer to antipodean wheel builders.

  • well she can use and abuse me. everyone else does. haven't got anything from mouse yet for doing his 2 rear wheels :p

  • Tut Tut. Mouse: give the man his handjob.
