  • for mac....odviously

i used frooty loops ages ago and it was (pretty much) just what i wanted

    what would you recommend?
garage band is a bit poo and i'm thinking pro=tools stuff will be a bit over the top

    any ideas?

  • fruity loops?

  • Logic, with some nice sequencers

  • what you trying to do, i thought garage band was not that bad

  • Ableton Live... i like it quite a bit (on windows). My main music prog is Fl Studio (what fruity loops is called these days) though...

  • just looking a fl studio
its come on a bit in 7 years lol
i might just try it out

looks just as tec as pro-tools?

  • flickwg what you trying to do, i thought garage band was not that bad

well im pretty basic, i dont know alot about music programs
i want to record live stuff, (low quality is fine)
and i want to cut and paste and twist lovely electronic pips and whistles

    folktronic anyone!

but i guess i want something that i wont outgrow to quickly,
thats what i dont like about most apple 'i' stuff

    hope it all goes well
i just think that the apple apps are a great place to start for most people, and help to get people into the world of creativity
although iPhoto, is so annoying, arrgghh! - so i don't use it
also the apple pro programs are very good, so tempted by a DSLR after trying Aperture, its the tits

whats your favourite program and why? iSew? (sorry i couldn't resist)

  • i hate iphoto as well
    like rrreeeaaallly HATE IT

    and iweb
but yeah they are a good starting place mostly

ive heard very good things about the pro stuff as well, aperture mainly.

  • ok well at least its not just me with a hatred for iPhoto
Leopard - is nice, got it last week
but its still a bit buggy, it corrupted a file i had been working on - annoying
but for looking at stuff i find coverflow so useful

  • Logic is probably what you will want, if FL studio doesn't go quite far enough. Pro Tools is more designed for straight live recording, Logic is a much better music creation program (but not as nice if you do a lot of live recording). FL studio may do all you need.

  • cheers fellas, im doing the rounds now,

flickwg ok well at least its not just me with a hatred for iPhoto

    you should erase and re-install
i havent yet but it will work miles better if you do,
my house mate has do so and leopard is now all buttery smooth and bug free

  • hmm.. maybe when it get to the extent that i;m really annoyed, an update is supposed to be coming soon

  • recommend logic too. it's an amazing program. not sure if you can still dip your toe in with logic express and if you enjoy that then expand to full version.

  • cool edit/adobe audition is very nice for cutting and pasting samples.

  • I recommend a four track and some mics. let go, nobody listens to techno (or eminem for that matter). Feckin hot chip my arse

  • bombadil cool edit/adobe audition is very nice for cutting and pasting samples.

I think Audition may be PC only. But it is very good (and underrated IMO). I found Logic to be a powerful, but a bit of a pain to use. It may also be overkill if you just want to string a few loops together and strum over the top.

  • Skullhead I recommend a four track and some mics. let go, nobody listens to techno (or eminem for that matter). Feckin hot chip my arse

    i like chips

and i would need to be able to play an instrument to use a four track....well kinda
ive only recently started playing ukulele

but yeah four tracks are cool

  • The new version of Logic is simpler (single window interface), and if you can get someone to buy it in the education store from their college/uni network, it's £118 incl p&p for the full version!!! Pretty good value if you can't be arsed trying your luck with bit torrents...

  • BringMeMyFix Pretty good value if you can't be arsed trying your luck with bit torrents...

there's no luck involved, you just need to know where to find the torrents
    i think they're very useful

  • @flickwg - a lot of the Logic torrents don't have all the extra content though. I thought I'd cough up for a change, seeing as it was such a good deal, and seeing how much stuff I've had for free recently :D

  • i use Ableton and really like it
you've got the linear way of working and then also the "live" approach lets you compose stuff on the fly

  • well ok, but not everyone is a part time student who manages to still use their student card ;-)
but good on ya for paying for something - its not so bad every once in a while

  • big mummy smeear [quote]flickwg what you trying to do, i thought garage band was not that bad

If you are focussed on Recording Live instruments then really Pro-Tools is the way to go as thats what its designed for. Recording. unfortunatly Pro Tools free doens' texist anymore I think. (which was an 8 track version of it that didn't require fancy hardware.)

Logic was originally a Midi Sequencer and the functionality has developed from there. but has well developed Digital Audio flexibility and room to grow... i

    • same as Cubase, which is what i use on PC (used to exist for Mac, still does probably?)

Ableton Live is designed for DJs and for Loopheads. its interface doesn't really work as a 'Session recording' tool I reckon. its suited to writing 'dance music' and loopy sample based music.

Fruityloops is a mess in my opinion - it started as a basic loop sequencer, whic was good for what it was, - a windows native 'Tracker' with a pretty interface... and then they just started adding more and more junk till it became just unusuble. and would be horrible to use if you are recording real world instruments.

    well thats my opinion.

  • +1 for Logic.

Audionews.ru have all the extra content. Plus the voices expansion.
