  • you and your new fangled ways

  • MrSmith you are all talking shit.
    all you need:

strikingly similar to my first home studio setup!

  • what'd Y'say?

  • that bird on the right is watching both decks at the same time

  • RPM you ain't shit unless you know how to prog an SR16 and run up a tascam 4 track

Had 'em both ! I loved my Tascam Porta 05 :)

I started with a HR16 then the HR16B then the SR16 - soon as I got my first sampler (Ensoniq EPS) the writing was on the wall for drum machines.

  • You tend to find 'Pros' use whatever they have grown up using, I know a few producers still regularly using Ataris with cubase (hell I'd rather be using an atari with cubase than a PC) and a couple of old Akai samplers!

if your on a Mac, logic is probably the most stable affordable program designed for writing music on. As said above, if you just want to try it out, find a hookey copy of express, if you like it, then buy it.

You are best trying to play with as many programs as possible, the best one will be the one that suits your writing style best, cos I'm sure they are all capable of more than you will need.

  • tynan soon as I got my first sampler (Ensoniq EPS) the writing was on the wall for drum machines.

Used one of these for 10 years from 1991, learning how to get the most from a MASSIVE 1mb of memory, split between samples and sequencing.

Eventually the buttons lost their click, and it developed a mind of its own, randomly triggering sounds and stuff - quite interesting, but not as good as my programming :D

Ah the legendary EPS 16 ! :) - some of my buttons also died after years of being poked around. It was that 'no click' thing' but I found that if you got a screw driver and pulled out the little square hard plastic buttons and replaced them with something that did not touch the sides (I used felt tip pen lids) that solved the problem !!??

I went from the palin ol' EPS to the ASR 10 - missing out the EPS 16.

I had a mind boggling 10mb on the ASR, can't remember how much I had on the EPS probably 1mb like the EPS 16 (?)

Did two albums on the ASR with it's 8 track sequencer !!

  • i some times use my dick' t' phone

  • some times he lets me use it...

  • i use an MPC1000 as the MIDI timing is special and organic, and the convertors do something magical to my 'beats'.

  • Renoise is a bit like Fruity Loops for the Mac. http://www.renoise.com/

Personally I bought Cubase just before Apple came out with the latest/cheapest/least protectedest Logic. I still like it though 'cos I know it so well.

I nearly bought an old MPC but talked myself out of it for some reason. I love the stories about how they have somesort of mystical element to the rhythms they spit out.

  • i just bought an MPC1000 and it's brilliant. should've got one years ago. so much nicer than software for chopping and flipping samples. just got to up my digging game now.

    i'm hearing that mate!
the bit crush on it sounds so nice and crunch! even logic can't match that.

pipwish Renoise is a bit like Fruity Loops for the Mac. http://www.renoise.com/

renoise is a tracker isn't it? that's gotta be much more complicated than fruity loops.
i think smeear would be best with logic or ableton live based on what he says he wants to do.
i've got hookey copies of both if you want to try before you buy.
