hey all,
Went to fit some new bars today, a cinelli stem and criterium combo.
I have a 90's Pinarello Vuelta. Once i had the stem in, i couldn't get the the stem to tighten? I mean the top bolt was tight but i could turn the stem about - the thing wouldn't stay tight.
Any ideas? I haven't had a Cinelli stem before, but wtf?
Retro - you know more about the bike than anybody, any suggestions?
If I can't get thing to fit then...for sale: beautiful drop criterium bars and black stem combo with black cross top.
Cheers,

What kind of expander has the stem got? Does it have a split in the bottom or a 45ยบ wedge arrangement? Are you sure it has the correct expander bolt - maybe the bolt is running out of thread before the expander is fully engaged? It's unlikely to be anything to do with the fork IMO...

..try again, but with the stem sticking out to the minimum insertion mark.
Could be a butted steerer tube (sheldon brown says)...?DO you have any other quill stems to try it with?
-
• #67
damn hutch that was quick! Split in the bottom. The stem was NOS from Dr Chan but i did noticed the expander bolt looked tarnished, and not very wide diameter?
Any way round it? Still loving the pin btw :-)

some stems don't agree with certain frames, try tightening it at different heights. if you were to sell, how much you want?
do you think it is the original expander bolt on the bottom or a bodged replacement? -
• #69
hi provenrad, yeah i have a wedge type SR stem in there at the mo. Tried 3 times at different insertions, greased the stem as well. i'll find out what a 'butted steered tube' is.
Cheers!

Quick, the vultures are gathering!! :-)

butted means the steerer is wider deeper down in simple terms, but I don't think that is true of the Vuelta fork - can you post pic of the stem?
