Crests will be fine, and better than any carbon wheel short of ENVE.

As you're on a lightweight crabon race machine, I'd say Crest as well Mick.
Don't you have WTB rims at the moment?

Arch are tougher and the weight penalty not too severe. You get a better profile with larger capacity tires, too.
Having said that I use crest for XC and the rougher stuff and they seem to hold up fine.

Figured the Crests would probably be the best bet, thanks folks.
Also that ^ costs pretty much the same as my entire build!

Hello,
There is a state in the south west of Germany called Baden-Wuerttemberg. You have probably heard of the Black Forest, that's in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Sadly, shredding Black Forest Gnar is currently forbidden as there is a bizarre law stating that Mountain Bikes must stick to paths of wider than 2m. This obviously rules out any sweet singletrack and sucks.
A movement is underway to try to turn this law over so that MTBers can ride as we do in the UK, a petition has been set up but 50,000 signatures are required. They're already half way there, but need more support.
Show how much you love the Germans by going to;
This is a German website, if you're on chrome browser then it will probably offer a handy translation option, but if not then here's a my translation.
Your support would be very much appreciated.
Prost!

If the Krauts can't raise 50,000 signatures domestically, they probably don't deserve singletrack access. Can't they just ride into Poland again?

Still laughing at this post.

Pretty boring ride from Stuttgart to Poland on fire roads though.

Yes, they need to find some lightning-fast way to get there, and a strong leader.

You'll be suggesting they take the train next......

That'd be one heil of a groupsave.

Anyone using hub gears? I'm thinking about getting an alfine set up.
-
• #4991
DJ has an Alfine 11 on his fatbike.
-
• #4992
What does he use his fat bike for? Are they actually any good for XC?
-
• #4993
they're good for n+1
-
• #4994
I think it's for gentle off-road hand holding with his girlfriend.
I wouldn't personally want to put any hub gear on a lightweight XC bike, but they seem good for fatbikes and off-road tourers.

My X7 1×10 kit (hub, cassette, RD, shifter) cost about half the price of an Alfine 11, and weighs about half as much. If you want to schlep an extra 2lb around in return for cheaper consumables (Alfine sprocket + Wipperman 7Z1 chain is ¼ of the price of a new cassette and 10-speed chain), you're probably on a utility bike.

The alfine has so far been very good, though I'd not use one for racing as it struggles to shift under load, so there can be quite a lag. Gear changes have to be more preemptive. Given mine went on to a fatbike it was clear that weight was not a major concern. Bike weighs 14kg.
Bike is used for xc riding.

Looks like something out of starship troopers :-/
Looking to build up a new rear wheel as I think it's on its way out. Figured it's the ideal time to go tubeless. With regards to the rim, i'm torn between With regards to rim i'm torn between Stan's Crests, Arch, or some cheap chinese carbon. I've heard reports of the Crests having a tendancy of going out of true/folding relatively easily. The various carbon options all seem to be around the same weight but i'd expect a fair bit more resilience from them.
I'm fairly light and not one for hurtling across rock gardens so wouldn't expect to be asking too much of the rims in terms of strength. My 5 year old machine built wheels that came with my £400 bike are still fairly true.
Quick thoughts?
