But i'm wondering about the comparative strength of a 29in wheel to a 26in vs. the scaling effect for a big guy (6'6'' 95kg).
Wut?

Wut?
if i whip a tail around a corner the lateral force exerted on the spokes will be higher than the same whip on a 26in no?

For that money I would buy 2nd hand and build your own dream machine....
I can build up a road bike all day but i simply don't know enough about MTB's to build one up :/

thread is closed but not sure if it sold, or if it would be big enough for you.
awesome spec.
Ooo interesting... compared to my other prospect:

what do we think?

26in wheels are stiffer for the same build spec, and a touch lighter. 29in wheels roll over all the things.
For a full sus you need decide wether you want a faster rooling low travel 29er, or a more knarly bigger travel 26er I guess.
Also alu is a great material for a full sus.
9speed gearing but awesome.

There's nothing different in the build up phase.

Well yeah, but just get some wheels that aren't garbage ;)

Stop talking out of your arse tester :) setting up a fork frightens the life out of someone who has only ever dealt with cable actuators. Air, in something other than tires? HELP!

This basically^
Stuff like setting up brakes and gears is usually easier on a MTB.Well yeah, but just get some wheels that aren't garbage ;)
This too. The difference in stiffness due to haveing 10mm longer spokes, and slightly bigger rim. Is teeny.

Fully rigid with cable pull brakes? Doesn't slow BN down ;)

Setting up sus is a massive faff. I still havent gotten to grips with my lefty.
But thats not actually part of the build up per se.

^^ this, rigid is AMAZING and easy and hydro brakes are not that complicated srsly.
Fitzrovia cycles built this up for me last week, my first MTB project/bike:

Well, if you're going to run off to a shop to get something done, all problems become simply a matter of paying the right expert
-
• #4890
well i could've built it up myself but I like those guys in Fitzy cycles ;) supporting LBS and all that

Can't see the appeal if fully rigid for off road myself. Maybe for nicely groomed gravel pathways but for serious stuff, na.
Hydraulic brakes are far far easier to set up and less faff than any cable brakes, simply bolt on, align, tighten, ride. Bleeding them is pretty easy too.
Suspension is about as easy as pumping up a tyre. Set the sag and rebound and bosh.
There really is nothing difficult about setting up MTBs these days.

HTFU? :) SS rigid mtb is way more fun
-
• #4895
please don't talk nonsense, SS rigid may be fun and have it's appropriate place but you cannot compare it to a "proper" mtb. I don't think some of the riding I've done this summer would be remotely possible single speed, and if it was, you wouldn't enjoy it. So what's the point?

6'7" 102kg
No worries.

ftfy
also, wise words howard!
Don't let AE hear you though.
Although I do think you can grind up most stuff fixed, I think some of the MTB stuff in the dales and lakes would be 100% impossible SS, and miserable rigid...

No, a lack of any fitness or skill do that already :-(
-

Fixed off-road is just dumb, unless you're talking about riding gravel roads. Other than that, it's just a case of the owner wanting to be different, or having some strange monastic sadism by removing all fun from their worldly pursuits.
Full sus, long travel, so much more fun. End of. Oh, and no-one mentioned 27.5 wheels. They make sense, if you're a bike company and most of your punters are morons.
Rant over.
I'm also very excited about this.
