So how does a 29er differ in it's LOG function?

The biggers wheels help you get over bigger logs.
Duh!

The 29>26 argument is like arguing over being shortchanged 2p.

What am I missing, not least the joke? Is that hidden in the "that d²y/dx² is negative between x=26 and x=29" bit which I specifically don't follow?
This just means that if you graphed performance against wheel size, the graph would look like an arch where the highest point (max performance in this case) lies between 26 and 29.
Though I would've wrote second derivative as opposed to faffing around with superscripts ;)

Sorry if this spoils the view people have of him but I have met Tester in real life. He is much like he is on here, dry, funny and factual. This rubs some people up the wrong way, and I have witnessed this in the flesh, but much like on here nothing he said was offensive, just truthful. He is also quite self deprecating and very generous with his knowledge and advice.

That is the equivalent of going to a Sex Pistols gig and not getting spat on by Johnny Rotten, you are a virgin cunt, yet to be defiled.

I hope by now you understand, thanks to other people's explanations, what "d²y/dx² is negative" means. The joke is, as you surmise, in taking Smallfurry's vague first proposition (26 and 29 are different but equal) as a complete statement of something which has been mathematically proven, and then using questionable mathematics to "prove" that his second proposition (27.5 can be no better than 26 or 29) must be wrong.

I was thinking that the basic (too basic IMHO) assumptions that 29ers are faster in a straight line, and 26ers are faster on bends, and undulations. That if these differences are equal, and the trail contains equal amounts of each condition. You'd be equally fast using either bike.
.....or somfink.
TBH the biggest part of the rant was that the difference between the two size was just enough to be interesting. But not enough to justify another standard inbetween.

I was overthinking / wondering if there was more to it than I saw. Gutted you didn't go off on one over my deliberate missspelling of campy's full name tho'.
Now you're going off on a tangent.
Assuming it's a continuous function of course ;)
