then wheels got bigger
Did they? :)
Yeah, I was back in Oz riding SS and doing 24hr team MTB races back then when Kona was a sponsor so I always wanted the Kona A and a shit, what was the steel SS they did? Someone on here had one. I remember they had the beach cruiser at one of the races.
Explosif, that's the SS frame I was thinking of.

Switched to 29 in 2007. Local mtb club in Crowthorne wanted to ban them when I turned up on one.
First SS explosif was in 2004 I think? I had 98, 01 & 02 Explosifs. Unit was around before 2004.

yup, changes the travel and of course the head angle. One will be slacker and longer travel and t'other will be more upright and less travel.
Do you mean two additional attachment points making of course three travel/angle positions?

my eldest boy had his e-MTB delivered on Monday afternoon so after he finished work yesterday we went out for a spin. Very nice looking bike and seems to ride nicely too although we only rode pretty simple trails. Me on my hardtail and him on the e-bike below (Vitus e-Sommet)

No, I mean two sets of shock mount points. One set is in use, the other holes are obviously empty.

Maybe you are thinking of the positions on the swingarm thing but I am talking re shock mount.
-
• #17308
my bad although presumably though you then have another three positions on the swingarm

What would changing it do?
It will alter something :)
Possibly the compression ratio of the shock giving it a stiffer feel. Who knows.

Bloody fixie skidders, you know as much about shock physics as I do!
I did try and find the model of the shock to see if I could get a new one but it doesn't actually seem as bad as I remember it so maybe I just wasn't used to it or maybe the rebound was tweaked at some point. Thing is I've never ridden dualies so I have no idea what they're meant to ride like. The front shock definitely moves way too much. More energy goes into up/down than forward. I have a set of Bombers at home on my old hardtail and they're not this squishy.

It's from 2004
The suspension will be kind of shit whichever way you run the shock

Fair point.
I thought this linkage style was pretty common so I assume there's some notes somewhere. If it's fucked anyway maybe I should play around with it and see if I can notice any difference.
-
• #17313
It's probably ok. I had a full sus Kona from 2005 with a similar linkage design :-)
It's worth removing the shock to see how the suspension compresses, as it's a good way of finding out if anything's binding. Once you're able to rule that out, you'll know if it's worth chucking a few quid at a shock service

Nice idea. Is it going to explode and take off one of my fingers?
-
• #17315
Try not to lose your Di2 fingers. The rest are just spares
Only the things full of air or nitrogen will explode and kill you

You can let the air out if it makes you feel better, but the frame's not holding it all together
Could you just sign this waiver for me...
Saying that letting the air out of the shock would also give you an idea of how 'sticky' the seals are
*only do this if you own a shock pump
-
• #17318
Oh yeah, you reminded me that I'd bought a shop pump a few years ago. So it probably feels better now than when I remember because I adjusted the air pressure at some point.

I thought that was all some horrible dream

That race sounds fun though. Maybe I'll try it next year

twentyfour12 doesn't seem to exist now. Mountain Mayhem? If I keep on this dirt path with the missus (ooh err!) we might see you at one as a Mixed (Up) Pair.

I'll keep my celebratory beers well hidden!

Mountain Mayhem?
That's the easiest one for me to get to, so probably

The only safe option is to wait until you get home and even then, if you were followed home...
Yeah, I always wanted one and then wheels got bigger etc so missed the window. Kona had such a golden age where they came out with some real off wall stuff, the "A", the Hotrod, the Joe beach cruiser, the Humu. Looks brilliant fun for nipping around on.
