  • Took some better pics of the Nukeproof’s raw finish here if you wanted to see it up close. Pretty agricultural but love it!

  • Anyone in here familiar with servicing sus forks?

My 2008(ish) Fox Vanilla R32s are loosing a little oil on the driveside leg so I've got seals and I'm wondering if I can just pop the lowers off without removing the top caps and coils?

There's plenty vids and tutorials online for servicing Fox air forks but little about the coil forks. The air forks can, it seems, be serviced in this way but, they seem to always let all the air out first so that the fork is 'unsprung'. I can't see why it wouldn't work, leaving the coils in there but I don't have much experience with sus fork servicing so...?

  • For fans of ESI grips, these are a great alternative. Bit firmer, which I think I prefer.

  • From what I remember of my 2005 Vanilla 32, the spring was easy to remove. Unscrew the top cap and out it pops

It was the other side that was a pain to open, as it had all the fiddly adjustment dials with tiny ball bearings

  • That looks like a lot of fun!

  • I probably have a suitable socket but I’ve heard it’s real easy to damage the cap. There’ll only be a cool on the side with preload? No coil at all on the damping side? I wasn’t sure if there was a cool in there too or not. If no coil and damping is working ok then I don’t really need to interfere with that side unless i want to put the oil in from the top.

  • Enjoying this, thanks

  • Estimated delivery 2027. I like to buy from Supacaz because they support the fixed crit scene

  • I'm wondering if I can just pop the lowers off without removing the top caps and coils?

    Probably. But eye protection.

  • Definitely use a flat faced socket if you can, as there's not much material there to get hold of

Should be a spring both sides, but the primary one ( that you swap for your weight ) is under the preload adjuster

  • that'll polish up nicely

  • Phew, did my first bit of mtb-ing this year today. Out of shape. Just some local trails and hills, first time ever using suspension forks - certainly easier on the elbows. Discovered the very basic shimano brakes I've had for a few years probably need bleeding and a longer front hose but can't be arsed and felt like upgrade time anyway so got some deore ones inbound. I realise deore is probably not an upgrade to most people in this thread :-)

  • @BareNecessities @t_w thanks for the vids, very enjoyable. That french guy especially, nuts.

  • Apparently peeps can meet for sports with appropriate social distancing.
If anyone wants to ride Saturday in the Surrey Hills let me know. Could do Holmbury/Pitch Hill.

Only 2 people though. So that's you and A. N. Other.

Or so I've gathered. Frankly, I've given up trying to follow the government's constantly inconsistent advice/guidelines/wibble.

  • I don't know A.N. Other. Is he of the Oxshott Others?

  • No, he's of the Featherstonhaugh Others. Pronounced Fanshaw, dontchaknow.

It is to anyone with SRAM.

  • Remember to keep at least 2 metres of air between you

  • Found a jump. Didnt fall off.

I did crash a little later though! Ouch.

  • There are some nice design features on their frame, particularly the stay protector, but there's a lot of holes for mud in those stays, if they sort that out I'll buy one after that new gearbox Nicolai. Have they been talking to Chris Porter about suspension?

  • For anyone that cares, it was indeed possible to do my fork seals without pulling the coils out.

Only issue I had was that the nut at the bottom of the leg on the damper side didn't want to screw back on, the threaded end of the damper was just turning inside the fork. I don't know how you're meant to do it or if having the spring out would mean you can compress the cartridge and get a bit of resistance or something but I eventually managed to get it on a couple threads and use a small spanner under the nut to lever the rod up into the taper fit so it wasn't just spinning.
