Not much to update but getting there on collecting parts for the Pretorius tarck. Good condition second hand CK headset and some Reverse bars. Aarn chainring in the post and need to find some Sugino 75 cranks and we’re pretty much there.
Apologies as ever for the photography.

Had a change of direction on the Kona Fire Mountain project. Was always going to be a drop bar tourer but it was one project too many and I’ve finally admitted I’m not going to be touring for a long time with the kids. So I gave that away to @platypus ’s lovely friend who promised to give it the attention it deserves.
Now I’m the market for a non-project hardtail MTB. My only rides outside these days are races or short (1hr ish) blasts (covid lockdown aside) and there are some great woods around here to have fun in so makes more sense than a tourer.

Great tunes released recently. Ulcerate’s new one is a belter. More accessible than a lot of their releases so a pretty good starting point if you’re new to them. Such an incredibly consistent band with an instantly recognisable sound, but each album has endless twists and turns to discover.

Black Curse have a new album out called Endless Wound that is a cool slab of old school death metal with lots of of interesting ideas. I was worried about getting over hyped before this came out (with members of Spectral Voice and Blood Incantation involved) but it far exceeds expectations.

Had a couple of old classics on the role this week. “This is True Death Metal you Bastards!!”. The best intro to any song I’ve no doubt. Asphyx, Deathhammer.

And some Death, title track from my favourite Death record, Symbolic.

You’re very kind! It’s already been used lots and she loves it.

Ah that’s great to hear. Always had so much potential to be a rad build, felt it deserved better than a dad bike hammering!

Picked up a Nukeproof Scout stripped to raw alloy. RockShox Lyrik 160mm travel (with 2.1 damper). Nextie rims on Hope Pro 4 hubs. Hope Tech 3 E4 levers, calipers and rotors. Sram GX Eagle drivechain and Travativ cranks. Hope and DMR finishing kit.

First impressions (from an extremely gentle pootle round the local woods) are that it is a serious weapon. Last mtb I rode was a GT Lobo when I was racing downhill at about 17 years old. This bike seems to fly over rough stuff better than that DH set-up! Amazing how much geometry has changed in 15ish years.
The 27.5 wheels feel enormous. Can’t imagine what 29 must be like. I’m sure I’ll get used to it pretty quick but feels very alien to the 26 of old. The 780mm bars alone make an incredible difference to the skinny bars we used to run on full downhill set-ups not long ago!
Super excited for the lockdown to be over so I can put it through its paces.

Some decent slabs here. No nonsense old school death metal from Wayward Dawn.

Abysmal Dawn with another fun record in Phylogenesis. Nothing new but every one of their albums is a guaranteed blast.

Graceless have hooks a plenty in Where Vultures Know Your Name. Album fits perfectly to a 45 min Trainerroad session!

Slam really isn’t my bag, but Afterbirth have come out with a pretty wild one with Four Dimensional Flesh. All sorts going on in here, even proggy, spaced out jam sessions! Interesting record.

Another bit for the Pretorius tarck. Just need some silver Sugino 75s which I’m pretty loathe to pay full whack for. The Aarn is the first new bit I’ve bought for it so I’m in budget so far!

That nukeproof looks mean as hell!

Progress! Slow as ever but the CK headset and Sugino bb are in the Pretorius tarck and the steerer cut (anything more scary than cutting the steerer on a fork with custom paint?!). Got some Sugino 75 cranks coming in the post and we’re on the home straight.

Same deal on the Giant fixed TT project. Now need to source some cheapo extensions, keep scouring the TT forum for a ‘cheap’ Tririg front brake and that should be pretty much it.

Been on a bit of a black metal binge of late.
Afsky released great album in ‘Ofte jeg drommer mig dod’. Nothing ground-breaking but the classic sound done so well.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=eODdLEZ_fB4
Sharp EP from Devil With No Name is 20 minutes well spent. Hoping for big things from these guys in a few years.

Helfro’s self titled album is so good. Amazing production job and riffs for days. Super aggressive, love it.

Lastly Valdrin released Effigy of Nightmares which is a disturbing tale and contains some fresh ideas and plenty of twists and turns. Great album.

Have decided to change tack with my Pretorius a bit now I’m not racing it and get rid of the carbon wheels and finishing kit in favour of more durable, all-weather items. Basically planning on ending up with something like the below plus frame pump.

Also my parents found these old tanks at home which they don’t want, so I’ve nabbed them. Need a lot of work but will make a lovely set of big basket shoppers.

Is it weird that I'm more interested in these two old bikes than the Pretorius...?! That pink Raleigh with those yellow mudguards - awesome!
-
• #144
Ha! No I’m pretty excited about getting them in good shape. Old mtb parts can be had so cheap that they should make pretty good bases for some budget builds.
-
• #145
Tbf, i'd say it only makes sense to build up that Raleigh, if it has sentimental value to you. The frame looks very heavy and of low quality, check out the ropey welds and the way the dropouts are joined to the stays. At the same time, you can get quality retro mtbs made from tange steel and the likes with solid lx/dx/xt components for next to nothing.
Btw: Love the diversity of your bikes and the attention to detail :) -
• #146
Oh yeah, I’m totally aware the Raleigh is a heap of shit! It’s unbelievably heavy. By ‘good shape’ I just meant safe to ride to the shops, I’m not going to drop any money on it other than v cheap essential replacements.
The Dawes is actually really nice to ride, so might give that a bit more attention.

Budget is the way to go. I actually found these budget projects to be very enjoyable and a nice change from building serious/fancy bikes. It might be a fun project to see how heavy it can get with a dutch omafiets front rack, brooks saddle with springs etc. :D

Loving the thread, so many interesting builds. The Nukeproof looks great fun and is a genre of bike I've been looking into recently. It seems we last rode mountain bikes at roughly the same time if you were on a Lobo. How are you finding it?
-
• #149
The Nukeproof is a real learning curve - harder than I thought it would be and is taking some patience. To be honest I’ve not given it a hammering yet given the lockdown but I’ve had a number of rides around the local woods and have been to a few local jump spots.
I think compared to the mtbs I had back then (Lobo for downhill and DMR Trailstar for jumps and 4x) it feels so long and slack (which might seem an obvious thing to say given the geo changes over the years!). For example on those old bikes if you were going down something steep you really had to get your body way back over the rear wheel (given the steep old headtubes), whereas on the new bikes you can stay much more centred, which is great for control and speed but just takes some time to trust.
It goes crazy fast though, even as a hardtail it seems to roll through the type of sections I recall being hard on the Lobo! I think it’s going to be a massive amount of fun - will just take slightly longer to realise its potential than I anticipated!

Awesome collection of bikes and some killer death metal tunes too, what more could you want from a thread?
I have a sneaking suspicion those Mack Hubs were the ones I had made but never got round to building up. Lovely hubs, hope you put them to better use than me!Also, if you aren't already familiar with Vitriol, they are by far one of my favourite death metal bands to have emerged in recent years.
'Egg'. Yep, 1/8"
