  • hi guys,

im new to the fixie world, been riding my old racer on the london street for past year or so and all the potholes have taken their toll. So now im setting about building a buget fixie, i plan to do the work myself including a paint respray.

Been readinga a few post wich have help me out so far but i have now come to my wheels!

I think i am going to buy a pair Mavic CXP33 rims but need help with my hubs. I would love to spend £110+ on each but my budget is tiny, £10 a hub would be great!Ive seen a new Zenith pair online for about £35 which i am considering. Although being so cheap I am a little worrie dabout them falling apart!

Does anyone have any advice or links to hubs of a simular price or cheaper? I would really prefer to buy higher grade second hand hubs or consider 2nd hand hub if anyone has any they wish to sell.

  • Ooof. Tough one. My On-One rear hub was pretty cheap, and seems good so far. Worth a look.

  • serriously make an invest emnt in a good hub, i went the cheep rout, you spend more money when you bend axels, and the lock nuts crack

  • Nah, go for the zeniths, they're fine. I've not had any worries at all with mine. Heard the locknuts were worth replacing, but until they give me both they're staying where they are.

  • System-X

  • Same thing, just more £££ due to the logo. Zenith, IRO, formula, its all the same.

  • can people use search? loads of threads piling up about cheap hubs...

  • It's much more fun to ask the same question over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over

  • yo,

Couldnt really find a similar thread. I'm getting some wheels built up with alf webb hubs/possibly planet x. Is it worth upgrading, I could only really pay 20/30 quid more. Any recommendations: miche, etc.

    Cheers dudes,
    Emil

  • formula hubs which is what your talking about are fine for everyday commuting
but if you wanted to pay more could go for goldtec but it would be more than a little bit i imagine

  • Formula. They get rebranded by a lot of shops as their own (SJS, IRO, Zenith, Harris...), maybe Planet X as well.

Many people have them and they are alright.

  • Quick search of "hubs" gives http://www.londonfgss.com/thread9696.html. For the record I use SystemEx and they're pretty good for £25ish.

  • SysEx and Planet X are all formula hubs, they're fine for the money. Good for a beater, but if you intend to use them on a nice bike or forever, up your moneys to Goldtec, or any other the other higher grade hubs.

  • No idea what the Alf Webb or Planet-X hubs are like. If they're anything like System-Ex/Formula/etc then they're good for the money. As peeps above have said already - loadsa peeps have them and loadsa peeps like them. I've had mine for a year and I can't fault them. Then again I've only been riding for little over a year...

  • i have run system x, alf web, and planet x on various run around bikes. nevaer had any problems with either.
i wouldn't bother spending extra unless you're going to use them on the track or something.

  • ...or if you're planning on walking your bike up and down Brick Lane all day....

  • Formula's 7th'd (or whatever we're on?)

  • I have been using SystemEx, OnOne and Miche for commuting.. and all though I'll recommend sysex and onone any day, I have been replacing bearings in them.. I have not, however on my Miche-hubs. It could be because I have only been using the Miche for summer, and not winter = salty roads with lots of shit on them.

  • i used an OnOne rear all last winter with rain/ salt etc and it did fine ,, i just used a shimano road front hub up front as its cheaper than anything that gets tagged with a 'track/ fixed handle plus i can stick a pitlock through the hollow axle so i only carry one lock .. also have miche primato now which seem fine .. would say either are good and just upgrade the bearings when they first need replacing

  • I'm pondering the necessity of low flange hubs for my next build. Something cheap. So not phils - even though they are perty. Similarly must be sealed, so not Dura Ace. And cheap, so not either of the above. Only aside from Phil, Paul, DA and Record I can't think of any low flange hubs...

By preference Id like them to be new and available in shops.

    Does any one know any?
Maybe systemX do some and I've just never seen any before.

    Big Luv!

    x

  • Mack, Condor have them in stock? Profile? Shop 14; Halo, Anywhere can order them; but only mid flange....

  • Interested also to see how many there are.....

  • miche primato
