Which winter shoes / boots are people using?

  • 2 pairs Marks and Sparks merino blend socks (£10 for 3 pairs) and Prendas oversocks. Lubly.

I'll probably double up with the second pair of oversocks for as long as possible before going to overshoes as breathability is so much better.

  • Hmm

I have purchased some Northwave Farenheit road boots, and teamed with Look Keo Easy - me no likey - at all. Might have to offer on here as complete road pedal/shoes package?

  • they look overkill for the u.k.
been using shimano mw-80's with no problems including belo zero 4hr mtb rides where water vapour freezes in your beard.
i bought a size up thinking 2 pairs of socks would be the way to go but they were too warm so now have my 'normal' size and just use a merino sock with them.

Anyone else got any views on these, or know if any proper shops stock them? I can't really stretch to the £150 lake ones, and the reviews on these seem good.

  • for that transitional weather (and poor people - if you own two pair sidi's you are not poor and should therefore be able to buy any product you need to have warm feet....) try gaffer tape on the vents of your shoes. its working a treat for me. next step is covering the mesh vents with shoo goo (or a seam sealer type product, nice and thick so its waterproof and windproof where the vents used to be). last winter i found that the problem was the cold air/water getting in the vents and chilling my feet. this last week ive been using the gaffer tape method to success.

now i just wish i could find some warm waterproof gloves that arent too thick, fit my fingers porperly and dont have massive gel pads on the palm for no reason and dont give me aching hands after about 40 seconds of leaving the shop.

  • Wise words ^ also, if your cleats are under the insole, fill the gaps with silicon bathroom sealant

  • As an aside,

    Tabio's plain over-knee socks. £12 a go.

My girlfriend just bought a pair for me and I reckon they're absolutely top-drawer. They're snug, they're lightweight, they stay up, they dry quickly, and they've a hint of Japanese school girl about them.

On the downside, they're made for modest plates. Sizes 5 - 8, so says the website.

    I now wear women's clothes.

  • My PRO 'ventura' over-shoes turned up after a mix up (was sent a DA chain and a Ultegra cassette instead?). Recieved the over-shoes before I'd gotten round to sending fishing gear back, which was nice.

They are pretty hardcore, with a plush fleece lining and thick rubber reinforcement. Not quite cold enough for them yet. But used them for a rainy commute, and they did their job well.

  • Smartwool Hiking Liner socks - essential - best damn thing I ever bought! Liner plus thin sock on top for the Winter win!

Just saw your post in the winter glove thread about it being -9, how are these overshoes doing? I need some badly (purple toes on Saturday).

  • Neoprene overshoes, around 0.3 - 0.4cm thickness is doing well for me, even though they look pretty weird. Definitely worth the extra 5 mins in the morning putting them on.

  • ^Had a look at the Venturas in Condor at the weekend, they are seriously beefy. Did I imagine a fleece lining on them too?

I've had oversocks and Endura MT500s doubed up and they have been a stellar combo over this weekend. And some tinfoil under my insoles just in case.

  • 5 fucking minutes? Have you tried using both your hands?

for some reason the ones i have are toight as hell and the zip is a stiff, so yes.

do you happen to remember how much they cost in condor? I believe they are fleece lined, I'm in desperate need of warming my feet up.

  • the zip is a stiff.

That's going to start to smell after a while.

  • On fleece lining - don't go for the Bontrager Pros with the fleece lining. It may have been a bad production run, but I tried about 5 pairs, and in none would the hole in the forefoot allow either Looks or SPDs to function. Bizarre, but there you go.

will have a butcher and let you know.

*written on a laptop under the saddle section of Condor

  • Checked online and they are fleece lined. c. £40 in Condor IIRC

They are probably the most effective that I have used to date. I find it a bit weird how fleece on the outside of your shoe can insulate so well. But it does. They reinforced with thick rubber, on the sides and on the toes. So shoud last (i destroy overshoes during winter). The open nature of the base, does not allow water in, as they grip well and the sides. They are so thick that I ave had to move my cleats.

    Review here.

Cheapish here, but not all sizes available. (I have size 44 lakes (more like a 42/43) with XXL overshoes, fits well)

I currently have great gloves, overshoes, and jacket. But my hardcorelongs and jearsey have gone AWOL in the post. So weirdly everything except my extremities is cold.

  • I need some better overshoes.
I have some cheap decathlon ones, but I find that whenever you put your foot down, the toe part flips over your shoes, which then get filled with snow. Repeat more than once and you get toes that freeze together. Those pro ventura ones look nice.

  • Yurp, mine do that when I use them off road. OK on the road but I think mtb use or heavy snow use demands something extramore around the toe cap. Pet hate is overshoe/cover which are too tight, they need to be snug but not too tight- if they are your feet freeze (circulation or possibly no trapped warm air?)

  • Ive just ordered and paid for these from Chainreaction......they look an absolute bargain, but are not in stock till 17/1/11.......lets hope they honour their price for the new stock....I can't see how they can welch on the deal??

I can't wait for cosy toes wrapped up in Pittards leather!!

  • Well I got them..... They are superb and I doubt you can get a better pair of shoes for £50..... 2nd only to sidi diablos.... But they are £200!

  • Clark's desert boots

  • Clark's desert boots

Ah, nice one..... They take cleats for spd's??

    ;0)
