  • less of the bad mouthing camberwell.
Ive lived there for over 17 years and i love it!
as for edwards - utter shit, numerous bad experiences and almost no good (except perhaps one years ago).
Went in the other day to see if they had any NOS chainrings with long spiders for older style crank arms...they told me that they weren't made anymore and may aswell give up on the idea of finding one and should throw the crank arms away!!!
obviously they've not heard of the internet.
throw them away!!!! i couldn't fucking believe it.
    Camberwell rocks tho!

what bastards for not spotting the revival in specific new old stock and getting it in for you personally.

if you've heard of the internet then why are you going into edwardes to get a shitty cottered or whatever knock off crankset?

    hint of sarcasm i detect?
i went into edwardes coz it was on my way home, and its a shop thats been around for a while (and might have something like that lying around). The chainring i was looking for has only been discontinued for a few years as far as i can gather, so totally plausible that i big shop that handles loads of repairs (however badly) might have some. Nothing whatsoever to do with any sort of revival. and the cranks aren't shit - infact they're pretty good.
i wasn't suggesting that the bloke/shop had it in for me personally, i was suggesting that a man who works in a bike shop telling a customer to throw away a decent crankset on the basis that he hasn't got a chainring that would fit it is completely ridiculous!

  • ive only ever had 1 problem with them but since then its all been good also why would u ask for a nos chainring there are still loads of new chainrings in different bcd's ask for that

  • the spider length of the chainring needed to be REALLY long to fit the cranks - went to brixton cycles, evans (pretty pointless i know), brick lane, and edwardes - all of whom agreed that the particular chainring type was no longer made...
    found one on ebay eventually.

  • Does anyone have the phone number for them?

  • which is why I'm doing all I can to get out of this place :P

    Latas...

  • sounds good conan, where do they normally host their nights? would like to come check it out.

    this is their page.
we should have a south drinks at the hermits cave.

  • well up for the cave!!!

So, can you get the chainrings for it or not? What sort of crank is it?

  • Yeah, i managed to buy a 46 off a seller on ebay - i looked for ages and this was the only person/shop i could find that had them. He's still got some 50 toothed left, here's the link:

Not sure what the cranks are... they're French, so maybe stronglight but thats just a guess.
The chainring's are really flexy and not particularly good but i haven't got the money for a new set of cranks at the mo.

  • Was in Edwardes yesterday getting some bits and pieces for my girls bike and gave me a small discount on the package, it was the older guy that served me and was totally sound, but this did strike me as odd, as he's generally a grumpy sod.

We all have off days, I guess.

  • i agree, camberwell rocks. i is up on denmark hill, the place to be.
edwardes sucks balls, but there is a little friendly one in peckham, wilson cycles. they dont have much, but you can be lucky. the owner guy is friendly, and very apologetic if he's out of stmg u after, and tells you to try edwardes, haha!

  • if you know what your talking about in edwardes they can be really friendly. Bought my last two bikes in there and they gave me a good discount on both. Can't say I agree with them being miserable, just maybe not employing flowery American customer service. I can think of a few bike shops with much more unhelpful rude staff.

  • oh and hermits cave: discuss

  • I have lived in Camberwell/Peckham for 3 years now and have always used Edwardes, as have my flat mates and girlfriend with only good experiences. They are always helpful as long as you are patient and polite (I work in retail and this applies to most shops btw).

All I can say is if they don't have something and they can't get it for you all they can do is say that and tell you their opinion, which I think they are allowed to have. What do you want them to do? Lick your balls? It is a bike shop, not a make-up shop

  • What do you want them to do? Lick your balls? It is a bike shop, not a make-up shop

If that's what they do in make up shops, I'm off to go and purchase some of that manscara i see being touted in the press.

  • ^ I've got a couple of addresses for the most accommodating ones...PM me if you want them ;)

  • poofs, se is the only place to be !!!!!

  • Homophobe

  • service there seems to have gotten better for the past half year. probably they realise they've got to be nice to people to keep them coming back amidst the credit crunch?

  • I've lived in Camberwell/Peckham for the last 8 years and never had any trouble. Edwardes have always been helpful in my experience.

  • Hi all, this post seems to have died but thought I'd start here and revive it! Firstly I have lived in Camberwell since 1992 and havent any bad experiences to report. Maybe I've just not been in the wrong place at the wrong time although I am prime material - middle aged white male occasionally dressed in a chalk stripe at 3.00 am buying a kebab from that place next to the Silver Buckle. I am 6'3 and 100kg though which may help. You need to have wits about you but that applies to anywhere in Lonndon.

As for Edwardes I have taken my 5 year old 10 speed Bianchi racer and given them the job of converting it to a single speed - ie change handle bars for those cow horn types, new brake levers, cables, spacers to rear sprocket, chain tensioner, new puncture proof tyres. The young ginger nut served me - no nonsence and seemed to know what he was talkiing about. Looking forward to the custom bike and hope they do a good job. Edwardes is a bit chaotic and has a few Arthur Daley types working there but they are local and serve you straight away which is more than can be said for Evans where you can think you the invisible man.

    Happy freewheelin

    M

  • Edwardes of Camberwell - a very good place.

    ha ha! that kids sound!

there seems to be loads of camberwellians on here, maybe the formation of a south east drinks at the hermits cave as I previously suggested? Or perhaps a summer barbeque drinks etc at the marlbourough

  • Vintage Edwardes

No name on the frame apart from a couple of 'Edwardes of Camberwell' stickers, and I'm guessing its from c.1960s.
