if you panic and grab the front brake too hard you're going over the bars, simple. If you ride fixed you should be able to pull an emergency skid at any time; the trick is to lock the rear wheel then use the front brake to slow you down quicker, don't rely on just the brake.
Excellent advice Sumo. Took me me while to be able to do this tho. Need to practice.
Sumo, ever considered teaching cycle training (almost as much fun as serving coffee at LMNH!) -

Get two brakes instead and don't panic. Scoble swears by it.

What happened to these to people (aimed at the people around in 2007/2008?) ?
Its like looking at grave stones and wondering about the lives of the people buried there.
Smeaar became a pirate, I still see him around. -

As long as you have your arms rigid and your weight fully on the back wheel, you really shouldn't fly over the handlebars, even when emergency braking with just the front.

Aye, it is.

i do agree on the two brakes thing. WHats the harm. Good to help you get used top the bike.

No harm, not necessary and less fun than using feet for stopping

Have you considered cycle training, David?

I can't even bare to cycle at commuting times because of how all the nodders ride, it's too cringy watching them diving between buses and lorrys. -

most track bikes have no way of attaching a rear brake.

This ^^ finally went fixed less than 24hrs ago and while I'm getting it waay faster than I thought I would the brakes on my Plug won't be going anywhere for a while!
Have got a new found level of respect for those that do ride well and brakeless.

The same Scoble who last year owned a Condor Pista with 2 brake levers with no brake callipers?

Mine has NO drillings and i have never run brakes on any of my Fixed gear rides. I now have a fixie porteur bike with a child seat on the back, so for the first time i have a brake and am loving it!
Would never run them otherwise, but as with a helmet if it helps you to ride a bike without twitching in a heap on the road then go for it.

i'm not telling anyone to get 2 brakes, wear a helmet or go on cycle training. just be aware that executing a stop in isolation is very different from a time when you have no time to think, and if you've cycled a bike with 2 brakes most of your life, and have only one brake, maybe the response just to pull the brake will kick in. maybe it won't. i hope that if you have read this then you'll stop safely.

Aren't there clamp on brackets that allow you to run brakes on an undrilled frame?
Also, how about disc brakes? There are quite a lot of frames out there that are able to run fixed and have disc mounts.
Look quite nice too.

Whats the last thing that goes through a brakeless riders head when he smashes into the back of a parked car?
His arse!!! Bwahahaha!
