What mudgaurds did you use?

Speechless. Absolutely stunning. After all these Oaks that have been coming up I've had a hard job convincing myself not to save for a custom frame... I know a power meter makes more sense, for now anyway, and now you've knocked me back to square 1...

Are you still happy with the flat bar option? I remember a while ago you have some tough time deciding.
Surely derailleur is possible by changing the sliding drop out?
Derailleur is possible, I have the dropouts for fixed/single, Rohloff and derailleur.
I do miss the many positions of drop bars, with flat bars on long rides one can get bored. It's just nice to vary things, to have different positions.
It's not a big deal though, I feel the advantages of the Rohloff (evenly spaced gears over a greater range than derailleur, with virtually no maintenance and the ability to shift when stationary) outweigh everything else.
I wouldn't give up the Rohloff now I have it, but I equally would've thought more about the bars at the time.
A lot of bike was obsessed over, but the bars were one place where I just spent 2 seconds thinking and made the decision to compromise... the simplest solution to Rohloff is to have flat bars, and I felt I'd already burdened Robin with one of the most complex builds to date.
I guess that's why it nags... I compromised on the bars, but didn't anywhere else. I remain fairly sure that with a bit of machining and Robin's mind put to the task that we could've actually found an elegant solution to the problem.

The spec list is somewhere. Gilles Berthoud http://www.gillesberthoud.fr/anglais/
Whose site still hasn't changed, and it's a bitch to deep link and share the item.
Had to have steel mudguards, as the mudguards are providing a lot of positional support to the racks.

Oh, and I never got around to putting the belt drive on it... because I never got round to ordering it... because there isn't a website that you can go that just has it all in stock.

This thread is so old that none of the images on the first three pages work.
It's also interesting to see how my original thoughts ending up very different from what I asked for.

seems common on the forum,
some cover 5 different build ideas on 3 pagesdont look at me like that JB

You could probably sell the Rohloff and purchase the following with the money:
- Drop bars
- Alfine 11 speed Di2
- Bar tape
- Wheelbuild
- Belt drive bits and bobs
- Drop bars

The problem is the stem I think, fit perfectly with a flat, might be too long with drop?

You must've missed the bit where I said love the Rohloff.

The flats are actually a fraction too close, the stem was made to be a perfect fit for drop bars, as such as the position with the flat bars is a little more upright than the position on my Serotta, but gives exactly the same position as riding the top of the bar on the Serotta.

The problem is that the Rohloff shifter is wide, and only just fits a bar... which means it cannot go around the curves in a drop bar, and so you cannot use the Rohloff shifter with drops without some inelegant way of solving this.
The solutions invariably involve putting the shifter somewhere ugly.

Have you tried the Alfine? You might discover that you love it equally.
And then you could use something other than mountain bike bars.

I'm good with the Rohloff.
And I'm keeping my current spokes too.
I'm far too broke nowadays to replace even those in a wheel build, let alone anything else.

Have you tried the Alfine 11? It's like treacle! Th 8spd Alfine is far nicer, but of course the Rohloff has the range and ratios. And is nicer than either.

Nope, not tried any hub gear since my Raleigh Grifter.
However the shifters are the standard Di2 shape, which I have used extensively and they are dead comfy.

What wrong with the GB Rohloff shifter designed for drop bar?
-

It didn't exist when I ordered my bike. That and another two were in prototype. But they're still pretty ugly.
I might just wait another few years until I can 3D print something in Ti, and then design my own.

So nice VB. I haven't visited this thread in ages, and by great coincidence I now own the maroon track frame pictured in the first post. My TT also got dented recently when I got knocked off :( Still rides beautifully and makes me smile every time.

Fairly accurate description.
They work brilliantly but feel very soft (like all hubs gears).

henry, for a bike cafe, I really think you guys should look into creating some bike picture friendly backrgounds somewhere.

Erm, no.
It's a pretty ugly solution and not entirely practical either. Doesn't look out of place on that bike though.
