  • Bit ott for commuting

    Unpossible

  • I was the filling in a Dammit and purple_MJ manwich at Tesco lights on OKR this morning.

All three of us on gears as well, things done changed.......

  • You ask me this at a time of indecision in my life. As you may remember from current projects my crank arm runs very close to the chain stay. When in my normal street ratio of 49x17 any push too hard and I get contact. So for the last week I have been running my track ratio of 49x15 on the street as I get contact less often (i guess its to do with how much torque the chain is under etc). Even with a ratio that big I still hit hills at the same speed and can be much quicker on the flat and I am tempted to stick with it.

I expect a typical forum out cry of Bad for your knees, yada yada yada anecdote about this and that.

    sounds good to me.

  • I'm on 49/17, that works fine for me.

  • Think my last fixeh was something like 53/21

my Dad (56) rode his fixed on a high GI of 75 since his 20's, basically 'grinding' it compared to my measily spinny 67GI.

He got an operation on his left knee last years, and end up riding a roadie/tubing it, he still can ride fixed, just not at a high GI.

  • Slight derail, but a question: what ratio do you run? I really have to up the 48/18 gear on the Bob because I've been riding the Feather this week at 47/17 and it feels quite a lot quicker, and no more bother on the hills mild inclines like Pentonville Road.

What I run isn't really important (I'm on 48/19) but it sounds to me like you just need to spin more, not gear up. I don't know what 'bother' you are having on the Col du Pentonville, but I can hit 34/35mph on 48/19 so you should be able to go north of that. It's a 30mph zone anyway ;)

And yes it has been said a million times but not without good reason: pushing around a silly high gear does involve a high probability of breaking your knees. You may be ok, you may not. It's risky.

Oh, I have no bother on "le Col" (I actually named that Strava segment, if that's what you're referring to). I took pleasure in dropping an ostentatiously-clad stick insect roadie up there last night. And yeah, he was trying. ;)

I'm not a great spinner to be honest, and that's the thing. I don't mind it (and I'm a lot better than I used to be) I'm just naturally more of a masher I think. The slightly higher gearing felt like free speed.

Always room for improvement though, of course.

Yeah, this. Sorry for ongoing derail.

Are we (the forum as a whole) still on the 'OMGZ I totally overtook a carbon roadie on my fixiewixie!' phase? >>>

    :(

  • Heh. Just illustrating a point / defending my honour.

  • And something about boasting about how fast you can spin.

    ;)

The fact of the matter is that I get faster averages when i ride on my bigger ratio I don't plan on riding fixed regularly for any more than a few more years, every one knows road bikes are really where its at.

  • Spotted dj or a dj lookalike coming from.queens gate into kensington gardens. Shouted but he was wearing headphones. Tsk Tsk.

  • That was defo dj.

  • I can hit 34/35mph on 48/19

That's pretty serious spinnage, I can only do that down a very steep hill in full death grip fear mode.

I'm not much of a spinner either but by gearing down I'm improving. Slowly!

    But, yeah. This.

  • Slave-tastic bike on Piccadilly around 6, orange frame with a Tokyo Fixed sticker, front tri-spoke, rear arrospok.

  • Jacqui leaving her current workplace on Bermondsey Street. Nice to chat, even if only briefly.

I was going up that on 52/17. felt like proper hill climb.
