  • quick maths:
it'll only happen to chainbreaker. rest your worries people.
    This is true...

  • .

  • Even if this is true, it's not the reason most people who ride SS with just a front brake do that, they do it because they want to look like they're riding fixed, when they're not. It's fashion. Which is pathetic given other people's safety is potentially involved. HTFU and ride fixed or buy a front brake.

That stuff just grinds my gears.

  • Someone must be selling a brake on classifieds?

    EDIT: Yes, Nuknow is.

    • Campagnolo Xenon Rear Caliper
    NOS, perfect - £10

    It's perfect.. in every way.

Surely a fixed sprocket is cheaper than a freewheel one? why not invest in that in the
first place and then not have to bother with a back brake? just a thought.

P.S. I didn't mean to offend you with the twat comment, I was simply speaking my mind and im afraid I still feel the same way.

Hey, i have to dissapoint you. I have a flip flop hub:) I'm just not ready for it yet. Started to cycle sometime in june this year and i'm just getting used to london roads. Freewheel plus front brake just gave me more confidence than fixed.
I wasn't planning to defend other ss cyclists just myself.

  • i have to dissapoint you. I have a flip flop hub:)

  • You know what, i have a rear brake caliper with a lever all attached together that you can have for free. PM me and you can have it.

  • So much love here

    ftfy

Yesterday evening I saw a guy on a boardman (ruined by the shit yellow deepveez) doing that, and as usual just think pretentious twat. My next bike is going to be ss, and I'm looking fwd to it, I never understand why the shame?

  • We are just looking out for you :)

  • Jonathan King and his pink Rolls-Royce, St John's Place, London, yesterday.

  • Thanks hartxander, i appreciate that. Let me first check at home if my housemates have some spares i could borrow for the time being. I think i didn't realize how important it is and how mamy voices it will raise. You brainwashed me.

  • @villa-ru - May have been me, I was behind you coming over the E and C roundabout, then U peeled off right after it?

Nice to "meet" you if that was you. I live on acre lane too!

Sounds right - hi! I live in Balham so go through that way most of the time - that was just where I passed Joeslain.

Also spotted a bloke trying to squeeze between roadworks and a car. Fail. Caught a pedal on a bollard and then bars on the wing mirror and tumbled into the roadworks. Mere inches from falling fully into the hole in the road too - if that had happened I would have cameraphoned him.
    I did a LOL.

...as you were, on with the noob flaming...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, riding freewheel one-brake is no more or less stupid than riding fixed gear no brakes. And no-one gets their panties in a bunch over the brakeless crew.

I'm not saying it's the smartest decision in the world - it's much better to have two ways of stopping than only one - but the chances of your brake failing are minimal, and the hissy fits being thrown here are more to do with cultural conditioning than a serious appreciation for the risk.

    hai, wanna cyber?

  • jees baptism of fire for ada"

I dont understand the depth of feeling towards other cyclists at times in these forums. Fair do's many offered aid and advice. Hartxander that was a cool gesture to make!

I ride fixed with only a front brake, been doing so all year actually - without retention!!!
Just bought some toe clips and new pedals to fix this weekend, but I rode without the retention because I wanted to get used to riding fixed before i clipped myself in.

I say the above because I have probably been seen by some on here, who thought "Twat, Fuckwit, Hipster etc" and simply as a flash judgement! I just wanted to make sure I was safe and not a danger to others!

ada, i do agree about the brake though! I reckon Hartxander's offer is a good one. Humane, and fuckin generous!

Yes it is it's way more stupid!

  • As someone who has snapped two brake cables I am very aware they fail. (probably due to awesome amounts of \ power from the power cry wanking)

I recently asked someone riding singles speed front brake only how they would stop if their brake failed, his response was by observing what was happening. Clearly an idiot, generally brakes fail when they are being yanked in an emergency, so it really is the wrong time to find out.

At least if you have either a fixed drive train or a rear brake you have the 2nd braking method as a fall back.

Mr G, you must have been very slow without foot retention.

  • agree with Crispin on this one!! at least Fixed you can attempt to stop!
Freewheel you just put your hands together and look skywards..

If you've got a pair of balls you can just wedge them between the tyre and the rear triangle. No mercy.

  • James - you have no idea! i was getting passed by all manner of kids trike!!
I can get off at a good speed leave the geared lot behind, but there comes a point when it feels like I've been picked up and am running in mid air! no thrust and the crank roatating! then they shoot past. I now ride everywhere quite sedately!! LOL

I need to get on some rides and get more experience when I attach the clip and new pedals.

  • To be fair, if I was riding a freewheel bike with only one brake and the cable snapped, I'd just step on the rear tyre and skid the wheel to a stop.

    That's just me.

  • lol..

Dont you think though it may also be that those with no braks and fixed are probably more experienced at this and more subborn and know it all than the potential for us to save a life with a free wheel and 1 brake who may simply be ignorant?

But i do agree with you that this is social conditioning. Its well known that this group has a high number of riders with very high seat posts, deap section rims, Sidis, Lopro/'classic' frames, cycling caps.
