I've been asked to write up a bike route to see all the tourist sites of London (or a bunch of em). Mike and I decided to make a day out of it and go for a ride. Got down to Borough market and was taking a picture there (part of the article).
First this mini cooper pulls up, slowly and politely through the crowd. The driver stops next to us, rolls down the window and compliments us on our bikes. He drives off and I say to Mike "Wasn't that Paul Smith?". Just then this blue Mercedes Vito Van comes through the saturday crowd laying on it's horn. I'm fumbling with my bike one foot clipped in (my first day riding Atacs and cleats) and my camera and bag all confused on me. I'm trying to get out of the way but dude is busy yelling at Mike to get out of his way. The guy hits my back wheel and heel meanwhile on the other side he scratches the side of his van on Mike's handlebars (which Mike couldn't possibly move in time and accidently allowed the man to scratch the entire side of his van, darnnit).
Loads of bystanders are asking if I'm alright and Mike follows the guy to erm, get his details.
Anyway, I start walking to get out of there and in front of me is the Paul Smith shop. Sir Smith comes out and wants to talk more bike and I say my back wheel just got hit. He ends up massaging my ankle for me and generally looking after me while entertaining japanese tourists asking to take photos with him.
He even excused the fact that he was driving, saying he had to drop off a bunch of stuff at the shop! The registration of said driver is LYO5 ORO, by the way....
Also spotted someone on an oldish (though not vintage) black Condor managing to almost get himself hit by a taxi on Endell St around 5 or so today...

Oh and thank you ihatelaw for the photo! That was worth seeing.

• #1910

ihatelaw Spotted, outside Condor this afternoon. Aforementioned white London langster with front and rear brakes and dual white aerospokes :( note his kid's fixie parked in front of it.
If you look really hard, past your disapproval of certain colour schemes, paint jobs and/or wheel designs you might be able to see a man with a bike taking his kid out for a ride on her bike in London on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I think that is a really great thing.
No need for the sad face :( really, they looked to be having fun (I also saw them outside Condor this afternoon) and you don't have to ride the fathers bike !!!
It's all good ! :)

[/quote]I agree with your sentiment, but the bikes in question are obviously put together to draw comment, don't you think? like the boy racer car with bodykit and coke can exhaust, there's more than a little "look at me" in there.
it's not *just *a bloke and his kid out on bikes really is it, it's someone who made a dedicated decision to build something that would get attention, for better or worse
so why shouldn't people pass comment?

he came into the shop i work at today (recognised the bike immediately) but he was actually quite a nice bloke. none of that hipster aloofness (also didn't even remotely look like one). very friendly. just out and about riding around. those arrospok's arent from blb, and the 'crack' looked more like some road gunk stuck to the rim. oh, and the kid's a boy. -

This is not an easy question to answer (I am not disagreeing with you completely here).
I like things that look nice, I have certain aesthetic tastes (as we ll do) I exercise them by buying a green t-shirt, others may choose red or black or blue.
The fact that I buy things that appeal to me does not necessarily say 'look at me'.
The guy could have just liked the look of the parts involved, is that so hard to conceive ?
Are your tattoos to draw comment or are they just because you like them ?
And if things are designed to draw comment (which I am sure your point is valid as some things are expressly this) then so what ?

Fair point, whether he intended his bike to draw comment or not (and it will only ever be a guess unless he tells us) there is nothing wrong with people passing comment - I don't think I have said otherwise.

i keep thinking of a max power motor driven by a blue and white synthentic fabric dressed chav.
to me those bikes are no different than this:

tbh I too am not above owning a specialized...
mainly I put the picture up cos there appears to be a cracked aerospoke - is it really just street grime? on balance of probabilities i'd guess yes, i mean who would ride a wheel with a crack like that in it

they are to help remind me who I am and what I'm supposed to be doing.
