  • Seriously - how do German people with Alzheimers ever finish their sentence?

You're not really asking seriously. I can detect that.

  • riding ... er... fighting against the wind...

ja, es ist zehr windig in "Richmond Park" heute...

I've probably ballsed that up too but you get the idea... probably "im" or "ins" instead of "in"...oh no it's senior school all over again... sobs

  • @ Ollie - you see, that's because the language has nuance and subtlety.

    change it to
"ja es war sehr windig im richmond park heute"
    before oliver sees it :)

  • Sunday:
robofoxx and mackenzie, enjoying the weather and beers at east beers locale, hope you got your jerseys for the vintage jersey ride.

    Tuesday:
Hippy, trackstanding at lights on grays inn rd, I was heading upto trixiedix to grab chain breaker from crazy james,
Then on the roof @ Trixie Dix, Sano, Mick and some others who I didn't know
Then on the ride back bumping into the long lost, TomP, he of the stamped bike whose been spending time on the velodromes up north, who hopefully will be making an appearance at herne hill sometime soon, if not this good friday. Good to roll a ways home with you. Don't be a stranger.

    Wednesday:
Markyboy as I walked upto brixton cycles, so they could run their eyes over my nights handywork in building up the track bike.
Spaghoops, rolling on the army bike past stockwell tube, as I walked back from brixton cycles, only caught your back as you were riding away otherwise I would have yelled and waved and grinned inanely...

okay sehr instead of zehr.. long-forgotten-spellings crisis... BUT....

    is it still windy?

    is it still today?

therefore do we need the past tense?

    gimme somethin here...

Ha - Phil got told by two different people in the space of 6 minutes!

Yes, it should be "im" ("in dem") if you meant the actual park. If you'd meant the surrounding area that people might refer to as 'Richmond Park', that would go without the definite article and would therefore take "in", as in "ich war in Camden", for instance. I think that under the influence of English, some of these distinctions are disappearing, however--I think a lot of Germans would find it acceptable to just say "in Richmond Park" in this instance. Also, it should be "sehr", and there's really no need to put the name of the park in quotation marks. :) But you can form a sentence in German, and that's very rare in this country.

EDIT: Too slow because of long-winded explanation.

  • I'll never try and write in someone else's language again, it's a bleedin' nightmare.

  • HAHAHAHA,

Just went for a lovely ride round Richmond park and spotted a guy on an almost fully carbon road bike... But it had TWO AROWSPOKES...... Nice guy, but it confused me.Why would you spend so much money on getting your bike light weight and then put two heavy expensive and a bit crap wheels on it???

  • Well, if it was yesterday it should of course be Präteritum: "Es war gestern sehr windig im Richmond Park."

  • But you can form a sentence in German, and that's very rare in this country.

bloody good question EM, i hope you asked him......

  • @ Ollie - you see, that's because the language has nuance and subtlety.

... and you could also say 'excessive ambiguity and vagueness' brought on by the lack of systematic grammar. :)

  • ^ and we know how much you don't like that, don't we?

  • change it to
"**ja **es war sehr windig im richmond park heute"

    Capitalisation and punctuation fail. :)

  • ... and you could also say 'excessive ambiguity and vagueness' brought on by the lack of systematic grammar. :)

no, no... its ambiguity and vagueness are there purely to help you run rings round someone else in an argument. Or backpeddle, depending on how it's going.

  • visitors to this thread are dropping like flies..

  • btw Phil, check your emails.

  • Ha!

I know!?! Who on Earth would ever want to own an Arrospok?!? ;p

  • Whatever happened to time, manner, place?

You can stick the time on the end in colloquial language. It's not a good option but in normal conversation people wouldn't bat an eyelid.

That, along with aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu and gegenuber sending the verb to the end, and it's all gravy. Or Cookedmeatsauce, as the Germans might say.

    "Bratensoße", actually.

    Also, "gegenüber".

Must get out of this thread. From now on, you can post as much faulty German as you like without a reaction from me. Yee-hah!

  • I learnt the trick to German is simply to write or speak English and replace W's with V's and TH with Z's. Easy really.

That's what Allo Allo taught me anyhow.

  • Teenslain's Landlord sat next to me in Franco Manca, Brixton.

Lucky I didn't open my gob too much with the gossip eh Joe? I got or at least overheard the Shed Update from him.

  • Oh and one of those Create branded unipacks in herne hill, locked up with a steel lock of equivalent or greater value than the bike.
