• It could be that the thing you collide head on with is travelling at 25mph though.

  • One day maybe, when his reflexes dull. Until then the bugger keeps swerving so I miss him.

  • My tuppence.

I do not and never have worn a helmet on the streets. I don't give a fuck if anyone choses to wear one or not as long as they don't endanger me why would I care what anyone does?

Will you be making your twins wear helmets when they start riding? If so, how long will you enforce it?

  • If they are racing yes.
If they are riding around the park no.
Too much over protection nowadays. They need to know that falling off hurts so it's best noto

  • Are fatter cyclists more likely to be involved in accidents?
That's an interesting question. They're bigger targets, after all.

  • Helmet yes/no? A function with variables:

    PLUSES -
    Likelyhood of crash/fall (racing/ice/nodder/shit roads/speed/downhilling..)
Likelyhood of being hit by car (busy road/quiet road/cycle lanes/can you block lane/your cycling style)
Likelyhood of hitting head hard (sandy path or hard road)
Speed involved (as heads are tough by themselves)

    MINUS

Likelyhood of riskier behavior when wearing helmet
Likelyhood of more arseholery of others wearing one

Rinse, shake, repeat and you have a rough idea of wear one or not.

I chose to NOT wear on commuting on hard roads at speeds of max maybe 25 mph while cycling extremely defensively. The latter prevented at least 3 times of me ending up on the bonnet of a car. Or buying 3 new helmets had I thought a helmet is some magic protection portable tank.

Your mileage/speed/behavior may vary so your risk will come out differently.

  • That's an interesting question. They're bigger targets, after all.

I'll do a study tonight in the 4x4, I'll post up the scores on the doors tomorrow.

  • That's an interesting question. They're bigger targets, after all.

But more padding = reduced injuries?

  • Depends on whether the rebound sends the cars crashing into buildings or against trees or not.

  • I was referring to the cyclist's injuries. Drivers, typically the cause of crashes, get what they deserve.

  • ^^£30 fine?

  • oh no they don't

You're not doing too well at following this thread are you? Have a lie down and come back when you're feeling better.

As for Joseph Reed, 50, from Willington in County Durham getting away with murder, well that's this cuntry's legal system for you. Fucked.

  • This is probably why you see people riding along with their helmet dangling off their bars.

Possibly the weirdest behaviour I see on a bike - if you have bothered to buy a helmet and taken it with you, it's surely easier just to wear it? Even if you've only got one for the appearance to please your partner / spouse / colleagues / whoever it's still more convenient on your head than dangling around.

I'm not a helmet wearer but if I decided to buy a helmet "just to please someone" it would be a half assed shopping trip and easy to get something ill fitting/uncomfortable and maybe even unwearable for long periods of time causing as bad as headaches or even simply some red marks where it presses on the forehead or something. It would also be as cheap as possible as I have important things to spend my money on like hookers(or whatever). I'm sure many share that mindset, women can be in an even worse situation where helmets only fit when hair is down or whatever, has anyone done a study on how a hair bun in the back of a helmet effects how well it works?

If my partner seriously asked me then it's a bit different, I know any mention of a rider down in an area I might be cycling in makes her worried(what decent partner wouldn't), would spend the proper time and money finding a helmet that fits correctly and is durable enough to take being used daily and do what I needed to make her happy. I never entirely write the idea this will happen off as she might see a report/study/crash that questions her view on it.

  • Always wear a hamlet.

  • Always smoke a helmet.

    Pffff

  • I’ve also heard that neurosurgeons and nurses swear by cycle helmets and disapprove of you if you present in A&E without one. They, I presume, have performed the appropriate controls, otherwise they wouldn’t be so convinced.

I get this when I went to hospital, they act like I've murdered a child.

  • funny I didnt get any of that aggro in southampton neuro,
but then I was completely spaced out on drugs for a fortnight so might not have perfect memory recall

I get this when I go to hospital and I'm meant to be on their side.

  • I went into hospital when I fell off and landed on my knees and the doctor asked me if I was wearing a helmet. I said I was but I didn't hit my head anyway, and why are you asking? He said they just have to keep a record of that, and the conversation went on a bit and he did acknowledge that as a motorcyclist himself, bicycle helmets might not really be offering significant levels of protection, and human skulls are surprisingly robust.

  • Yet, whenever I murder a child, helmet wearing seems to be the least of peoples worries.

I know, same as drowning kittens in hessian sacks with bricks.

I've yet to hit my head, but have been asked about helmet wearing when I damaged a knees and shoulders on separate occasions.
