• Another anectodal cautionary tale offered up on the benefits of wearing a helmet...

I was cycling down to Shoreham yesterday to join family and friends for a weekend by the sea. Going down the hill in Kingswood when a car made a turn into me. No time to brake - went over the bonnet, shattered his windscreen and flipped over the roof of the car. Ambulanced to A&E and told I was extremely lucky to walk away from it with only cuts and bruises. The bike's mashed, various bits of me are more red and blue than they were previously, but the helmet saved my head.

I only started wearing a helmet a year ago when I saw one of the more extreme "mashed face, but my helmet saved me" threads on this or another forum. Still not sure I'd wear one in town, but when I'm doing any sort of distance riding on open roads, you can bet I'll be wearing a lid.

I guess you can be the safest cyclist on the road, but you can't account for the other fools. Cycle safe people...

  • Glad you're ok Rab!

  • An eye-opener at no mistake. If you don't wear a helmet, you will undoubtedly sustain a blow to the head in your cycling lifetime. Better safe than sorry...

Clearly you have already received your blow to the head.

  • If the rest of you isn't fucked then your head wouldn't have been either.

    You sir, are a fool.

  • I like my helmet.

  • I'm due a new one soon too, I reckon. Might buy a Giro Ionos next. The Livestrong ones are probably going to be discounted soon, id imagine.

Harsh but fair..... I've had a Giro Ionis for almost a year - v comfy, etc....

    • 1 Glad you're ok..... I still get a cold feeling now and again after my own head impact - more so as I don't think the cyclist next to me in A&E, who got knocked off that same evening having sustained a far worse head injury than me, made it through...
  • Hello Gents, For extra safety remember to wear your helmet in bed. It's especially risky there - and a stupid plastic no-good propaganda-driven, fashion-item-piece-of-polycarbonate-head-enlarging piece of Shenzhen-moulded cobblers will act as a superb contraceptive. Dear God! When will you flutes get sense?

  • I can't ride without a helmet, just feels wrong.... and when I've come off, every single time the helmet wrecked but I'm (sort of) OK (except when I cracked my shoulder.... long story).... now it is me... or are there a lot LESS people wearing helmets this summer than last?

  • Bagheera, why don't you take cycle training instead? I'm sure you'll find yourself being able to ride with confident without worry about falling down.

  • Ugh...

  • Ugh...

  • Anyone know where I can find a Pro Tec helmet in central London? Any shops have these in stock?

  • Snow and Rock?

    Fuck Evans prob sell em'

  • I've seen a couple of cool looking helmets - one by Bern I think - they're sort of all stealth angles and look like some sort of 'future soldier' helmet. Saw a really hot asian fixie chick in one near Old St. roundabout, and someone in a pink one yesterday. I'm still trying to find out what they are. typing 'cool cycle helmets' into Google didn't work. :(

  • Couldn't find the names and faces to helmets thread so i'll post it here. My shiny new MTB (don't worry it's SS so it's all good) helmet:

To be honest it was mainly chosen for it's patriotic colour scheme.

  • Yeah, it's the Bern Baker/Muse. Ace prop if they ever decided to do Universal Soldier 3 or something - and the khaki and carbon grey colours are awesome. I like the matte finish too.

  • Don't forget that despite the cool appearance of Bern, they're not so cool in keeping you well.. cool.

if you want a helmet, forget about finding the nicest looking one and choose the one that you find comfortable.

  • To be honest those Bern helemets, seeing them outside of a skatepark, they just look silly imo.

  • Yeah, I noticed that there's only one with vents. Well, fair enough.

  • "And he said unto his followers,

forget about finding the nicest looking one and choose the one that you find comfortable,

for this is truly the path to Scobledom"

  • 20% off lids at Wiggle until midnight tonight if of interest...

  • To be honest those Bern helemets, seeing them outside of a horse polo field, they just look silly imo.

Need to try them on though. No point having a nice looking one that doesn't fit.
