Did this with a helmet on...
Helmet took most of the force, it was fucked. If I had not been wearing a helmet I would have been in deep crap!

If you're skiing and not falling then you're not skiing hard enough or pushing yourself!
Sure, once you get to a certain level then you can ski all day without falling if you're happy to cruise—*but the same is not true if you really want to improve.
I have worn a helmet since I got more serious about skiing and would NEVER consider not wearing one ever again. I have been saved time and time again by helmets, in the park, on the piste and a most of all off piste (where help is the furthest away).
I've been twice already this season and can safely say that without a helmet I wouldn't be typing this—*several times over. In my opinion, whatever your level of ability they are essential.

skilled riders don't need helmets, they can forsee the unforseeable, so never fall off (or drink), just get some cycle training, you'll be dandy, go back to bed.*
*this is not serious.

Today I saw a guy with his helmet strap between his teeth instead of around his chin.
Looked like a nice way to loose ones teeth in case of a fall. -

ok, a bit of a thread dredge, but i love statistics and this video cuts through the shit of what really is and what isn't.
Can't help but love this video,
especially the part where the Ian Walker,
from the University of Bath discusses the statistics regarding making it compulsory to wear helmets in Australia.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdoE2YCvwdM&feature=player_embedded

That's quite a good video; the example of aspirin is particularly suitable to illustrate the mechanism of risk compensation. However, there's a lot missing from it. The only 'positive' measure mentioned in it (beyond 'no action') is wearing a wig, as a parting joke. People are just going to ask: 'But what can I do if I shouldn't wear a helmet?' Cycle training doesn't get a mention, for instance. Still, it's nice to see a journalist tackling risk compensation. It's such an important principle to get across.

Why. Why. Why.
Bring this up again?

It'll always keep coming up, Jon. As you know, it's one of the endlessly-debated topics of cycling. I'm quite resigned to that. It'll blow over again, and then someone will dredge it up again. Cycle campaigning is like Groundhog Day sometimes. ;)

Another anectodal cautionary tale offered up on the benefits of wearing a helmet...
I was cycling down to Shoreham yesterday to join family and friends for a weekend by the sea. Going down the hill in Kingswood when a car made a turn into me. No time to brake - went over the bonnet, shattered his windscreen and flipped over the roof of the car. Ambulanced to A&E and told I was extremely lucky to walk away from it with only cuts and bruises. The bike's mashed, various bits of me are more red and blue than they were previously, but the helmet saved my head.
I only started wearing a helmet a year ago when I saw one of the more extreme "mashed face, but my helmet saved me" threads on this or another forum. Still not sure I'd wear one in town, but when I'm doing any sort of distance riding on open roads, you can bet I'll be wearing a lid.
I guess you can be the safest cyclist on the road, but you can't account for the other fools. Cycle safe people...

If the rest of you isn't fucked then your head wouldn't have been either.
-
• #2067
Dunno about that, relatively light impacts that could mean bruising on a nice fleshy part of your body could seriously harm your health if they hit your head -- a small impact can have devastating consequences.
-
• #2068
That kind of depends on if it was his head that broke the car windscreen or took any major impact. Your logic is floored.

If the rest of you isn't fucked then your head wouldn't have been either.
The split down the front of my helmet and embedded glass says otherwise. BTW I'm not preaching here - like I say, another anecdotal story - you can take it or leave it mate.

Glad you're ok rab. Keep thinking that perhaps I should wear a bash hat...

An eye-opener at no mistake. If you don't wear a helmet, you will undoubtedly sustain a blow to the head in your cycling lifetime. Better safe than sorry...

I think you'll find bikeradar is over there ------->
Glad you're okay though.

this was always going to be merged!
The split down the front of my helmet and embedded glass says otherwise
this is the logic behind all 'the helmet saved me' threads and obviously wrong... Try breaking a bike helmet, try pushing a peice of glass into a bike helmet... It's considerably easier than into you scalp let alone through the skull.
I'm not saying don't wear them, just that this kind of logic is flawed.
(I don't FYI)

what kind of fucked up superstition is this?

One held by a "Doosh".
As a helmet wearer I'm a little bit disappointed I've crashed so many times whilst cycling. I guess this voodoo doesn't work both ways? Pity.
Colour me embarrassed. :(
