Urgh, Lewes Road.. It's been the site of every accident and near-miss I've had in Brighton. My first was a blind left-turner who, after cutting me up and causing me to crash into him, proceeded to get out of his car, punch me, and drive off.
With the car-door zone 'cycle lane', kebab-shop divers, pinch-point crossings and crazy left-turners, that road is a deathtrap. I religiously avoid the section between the Level and Sainsburys by taking Upper Lewes Rd. from the gyratory.

i've been knocked off on lewes road, too - someone turning across the cycle lane into that petrol station that's now shut.

Thats harsh Crank, I hope you got his number or took swing back at him, that kind of shit shouldn't be allowed to slide. Brightons prick driver quota is increasing rapidly, a born again biker had the front to beep at me whilst I was occupying my rightfull position in the road going past the Barfly, the pussy whizzed off before i could let fly at him, I was shocked as I normally see motorbikes as comrades in the battle against 4 wheels.

It was actually the passenger, and he was without exaggeration the largest man I've had the misfortune to meet - brick, shit, house - so no swings back. I did fantasise about it for a week afterwards though.
I got their number, as did three independent witnesses.. called the roz to report a hit and run + assault. They told me to wait in the street (with rapidly swelling wrist) until they sent a car round. Called them back an hour later.. "Oh sorry, we're not actually coming.. Fridays are very busy doncha know."
Went to the station and filed a report, they went to the registered owners house, he claimed he'd sold the car for cash 6-months previously. They didn't bother to show me a picture or anything to see if he was telling the truth. So car was officially unregistered, untraceable. Haven't heard a peep since.
Unfortunately Ive now misplaced the reg. number, so can't chase it up (I've since met a journo with access to the DVLA records who was willing to run the number for me).
Another day in the life of the lazy, negligent Brighton Police.

anyone for a ride on wednesday/tommorow?

the brighton police are overworked i'm sure, but when i got randomly assulted i actually had to phone them up twice to remind them to take a statement. i never heard anything back, but i'm glad i at least reported it.
funny that we're talking about near-misses... i just had one on King's Road, some idiot in a 206 GTI was inches from my back wheel whilst shouting that I should be in the bike lane. i wasn't exactly travelling slow (testing out the new mavic wheel for speed) at about 25mph and accelarating... if i'd so much as tapped the brake i'd have been under his wheels. needless to say i gave him a piece of my mind, took his number plate and reported him. unfortunately i didn't stop for witnesses. but at least his plate is on file for agressive driving towards a cyclist... IDIOT

brighton cycle lanes are quite amusing. my favourite are one way streets where the cycle lane goes the other direction to the traffic. genius.
i'm up for that night ride too. same reallym, as long as its not wet.

On the subject of stoopid cycle lanes... I expect a few of you may have noticed that the dumbass road monkeys have removed the ASL for cyclists on the Lewes Road at the bottom of Coombe Road - it was bad enough there *with *the ASL and now the fools have taken it away you end up with a load of cyclists immediately to the left of left-turning traffic. If you so rudely dare to get in front of the cars at that point they now go mental, whereas before they just had to lump it. I've got a jolly good mind to write to someone officious!

Just looked at the route for the night ride - looks pretty sensible...
Will be cycling down from London on Sunday via that route (weather permitting) and probably stop off at the bluebell railway... maybe try n meet up?

Spotted: Orange bike, black cap - going past Sussex Uni/to Lewes twice this week about 6pm. Anyone?
-
• #423
thanks Kelvin, shall I let you know after the weekend?
You can see it first, no obligation to buy it, I've had it a while and seems a shame for it not to be used but my geared bike broke the other day (cracked frame) so I only have my fixed now and a surplus of saddles

That's Lewis, I reckon. Orange since his respray, cap still black...
Once again riding down Lewes Rd was almost wiped out by someone turning left, this is pretty much once a week. He did look surprised when I tapped on his window though. Sorry, just needed to vent some annoyance.
