I ended up putting a new tyre and tube in as well as wrapping some electrical tape around the rim on top of the rim tape. Seems to be holding up ok so far.

Wait, you mean electrical tape and rim tape aren't the same thing?!

I've always used electrical tape on mine and it works a treat, looks fantastic too!
