Charging full price for a lager top i have no issue with, the amount of lemonade in there in relation to the beer is negligible. To me it seems that for bar staff there is no difference between lager top and shandy.. even as they half fill that pint glass with lemonade. Going to start querying it and be “that guy” in pubs..

You already were “that guy” in pubs…

Extra charge for bar staff faff time? They can serve 10 pints of lager in the time it takes to make 8 pints of shandy. Maybe.

what by buying cider?

• #23031
have you been in a bar waiting to be served behind someone waiting for a couple of cocktails?
Adding lemonade to a pint glass before pouring in half a pint of lager isn't going to break their serving timings.. -

I may try this in future and see what the cost is.. and whether the extra exertion is worth it.

Is lemonade much cheaper than beer? Whenever I have had soft drinks in the pub they always seem outrageously priced.
-
• #23034
mixers are outrageously priced. especially if they are on tap. really miss getting icy cold radlers in spain/germany/france

But it's quicker to make a shandy than to do a half a lager and half a lemonade. By that reasoning a shandy should be cheaper than two halves. (which it isn't)

On that I hate how expensive pop is on the little gun thing.

I've never paid attention so... is a half of lager half the price of a pint of lager?
-
• #23038
Yes, but also half the volume.
-
• #23039
Which is cheeky considering they get to set the level of syrup to carbonated water, which is why it usually tastes watered down.
-
• #23040
Perversely, it's why I usually prefer mix-tap coke to bottled coke.

It is in the UK cos there's a great law about it. In other places it's often near 80% of the pint cost for a half, which is a crazy rip and encourages drinking more.
Edit. Googling this I can't find that it's actually a law, must be just a very good historical precedent -

I always check how much a half is in comparison to a pint and friends always say I’m stupid because of course it’s half the price. But I’m sure I’ve been places in the UK before where that hasn’t been the case.
-
• #23043
You need to tell your friends that it’s literally never half the price.
-
• #23044
If it's something usually served in pints, then
a half will often be more than half the cost as some of the costs are fixed if you break them down as paying the staff time, washing the glass etc. although it should be pretty close. Stuff that's normally served in halves because it's mad strong, is usually pretty much bang on double the cost in a pint if they'll serve it that way. -
• #23045
They can, but the reps come in and check/calibrate it so it's not worth the hassle of getting a bollocking/losing supply to do so.

“This isn’t how I roll!”
That annoys me too. I used to charge for a half plus "mixer" which was about 60p at the time. At least charge for a half of beer and whatever a glass of lemonade would cost. Lager top on the other hand was still charged as a pint.
